China is not amused by our projected sales of weaponry to Taiwan.

The Chinese people I know seem to be amused by the NBA and other American professional sports teams. I'm certain if we set up an NBA team in Beijing, they'd forgive us for everything and be a strong ally. AND...they absolutely adore KFC! Holy Bhagworm |

HB,
China has claimed sovereignty over Taiwan since Japan surrendered it after WW-2. The USA has maintained a wishy-washy attitude by selling arms to Taiwan to help protect its independence, meanwhile remaining "neutral" on the question of Taiwan's relationship to China. China, on the other hand, has never changed its stance: Eventually it intends to take Taiwan over—by force of arms, if necessary. The current protest about our sales of arms to Taiwan is unlikely to develop into a serious confrontation, but I see it as a disturbing sign of things to come. Seán |
