This is a low priority, albeit annoying little problem I have encountered. Perhaps it is unique to the Starter edition.

Several of my programs won't display as icons when you create a shortcut, say on the desktop. When you go into properties -- change icon, it won't let you change to the real icon for the program. The particular programs I am referring to don't have the old style .ico files. They simply show a picture with the .exe file, which displays perfectly as an icon in XP.

I tried simply copying the program and changing the .exe file extension to .ico, but that doesn't fool Windows 7.

Any suggestions?

Try rebuilding the icon cache. Instructions to do that are here:
