"Artist Thomas Gainsborough (1727-88) painted the famous "The Blue Boy" (oil on canvas, 70 5/8 x 48 3/4 inches) portrait ~1770 and it portrays Jonathan Buttall, the son of a successful hardware merchant, dressed in a costume dating ~140 years before the portrait was painted. The portrait is deemed to be Gainsborough's act of homage to the great Flemish painter Anthony van Dyck (1559-1641)." The Blue Boy is owned by the Huntington Gallery in San Marino, CA. ~~sheesh...~~ |
