Thanks for posting this. There's a much longer list at the original source:
http://www.adherents.com/lit/c...c_book_religion.html

And that includes some major super-villains.

Lex Luthor, for example, was Episcopalian but is now a Nietzschean atheist.

The Green Goblin is also an atheist.

There's even a supplemental list here:

http://www.adherents.com/lit/c...book_religion_2.html

The amount of research that has gone into these pages is extraordinary!

Spider-Man is Protestant. Here's a quote showing one of his prayer sessions:

quote:
DOCTOR STRANGE: So that you will know this was not simply a dream . . . there is an etymology [sic: entomology] book on your third shelf. Look to page seventy-three.

SPIDER-MAN: And then . . .?

DOCTOR STRANGE: Pray.

SPIDER-MAN: . . . pray . . .

[Peter Parker wakes up from his dream (which was not simply a dream), in which Doctor Strange appeared to him and conversed with him on the astral plane. He finds the book on his shelf and opens to the page Doctor Strange described. The page has a picture and description of a "Spider Wasp."]

The spider wasp is the most efficient spider-killer in the insect kingdom. Its sting quickly subdues its prey by paralyzing the spider's central nervous system. But it does not kill the spider all at once. The spider wasp carries its prey to its nest, or if the spider is too large to carry in flight, the wasp simply drags it to the nest. In order to make the spider easier to drag, some spider wasps bite off the spider's legs, often drinking the blood that leaks form the wounds. The spider wasp places a single spider in each nest, which is often constructed after catching the prey.

[Peter Parker's face shows that he is rather horrified after reading this description.]

PETER PARKER/SPIDER-MAN: Hey, God? It's Peter again. Listen, not that I'm complaining or anything, but next incarnation, just for a change of pace, you think you could have me get bitten by a radioactive Jennifer Lopez? Just a thought."

What do they look like? Can you really tell if someone is Jewish?

Maybe a bit like a golem? ... Anyhow, his being Jewish was revealed some 40 years after his introduction in comics. Whether that was always the intention for the character, I dunno. But see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thing_(comics)#Religion

I suppose Lex Luthor could pass for an Episcopalian.

There are 99 Muslim superheros endorsed by the Prez coming to TV!!!

The left must be in ecstasy over the tolerance of Islam coming to American TV.

Stephan,

I read the Wikipedia article a couple of days ago. Interesting...and NO, The Thing doesn't look Jewish, unless you want to count looking like a golem as "looking Jewish." But that would say more about you than about The Thing.

The illusion of freedom will continue as long as it's profitable to continue the illusion. At the point where the illusion becomes too expensive to maintain, they will just take down the scenery, they will pull back the curtains, they will move the tables and chairs out of the way and you will see the brick wall at the back of the theater.”

TFQ:

Try breathing into a paper bag.

Ecstasy is a very strong word. You do tend to speak in superlatives I see nothing wrong with it...In fact, if done well, it could be useful to all of us seeking resolution.

But if 72 virgins make an appearance all riding white horses, it might be a bit much.

Is this only costumed superheroes and sidekicks, or does it include those that wear normal clothes?

Willow Rosenberg (of Buffy tVS) was Jewish and Wiccan (sort of like somebody here? Smile :) ).

The Halliwells of Charmed were definitely Wiccan.

I was watching The View this morning and they reported that The Pope has declared Homer Simpson to be a Roman Catholic.

So hey, I think we could include any fictional hero.

From Wikipedia:

quote:
Although Homer attends church, has been baptized and has even had conversations with God, he has indicated, on numerous occasions, that he is not religious. For example, in The Simpsons Movie, before entering the church, he says, "Relax, those pious morons are too busy talking to their phony-baloney god."

Lisa Simpson, was portrayed as Christian in the second season episode "Homer vs. Lisa and the 8th Commandment", however since "She of Little Faith", has been a secular Buddhist, although she accepts her family's beliefs (after advice from Richard Gere), going to church with them and celebrating Christian holidays.

If it's any fictional character, then I'd presume that The Flying Nun was probably Catholic. Smile :)

Hahaha.

Just in from the Vatican...

Homer and Bart get Pope's blessing after Jesuit study reveals Simpsons are Catholic

quote:

It might be one of the most controversial cartoon shows currently on television, but The Simpsons has always attracted an army of devout fans.
And now programme makers can boast that the antics of Homer, Bart and the rest of the dysfunctional family are watched religiously - after receiving the blessing of the Vatican.

The official Vatican newspaper has declared that the programme's central characters - beer-swilling, doughnut-loving Homer Simpson and son Bart - are Catholics who raise questions concerning the Christian faith.

The article in Sunday's Osservatore Romano even encourages parents to let their children watch 'the adventures of the little guys in yellow'.

'Few people know it, and he does everything to hide it. But it's true: Homer J. Simpson is Catholic', the article declares.

The newspaper cited a recent study by a Jesuit priest of a 2005 episode of the show called The Father, the Son and the Holy Guest Star. That study concludes that The Simpsons is 'among the few TV programmes for kids in which Christian faith, religion and questions about God are recurrent themes'.

'The family recites prayers together before meals and, in its own way, believes in heaven,' the newspaper quoted the Jesuit study as saying..............................

...........But last year the Vatican described the show as "tender and irreverent, scandalous and ironic, boisterous and profound, philosophical and sometimes even theological, nutty synthesis of pop culture and of the lukewarm and nihilistic American middle class'.

Yesterday the programme's executive producer denied that its characters were Catholic, saying he was baffled by the endorsement.

'We've pretty clearly shown that Homer is not Catholic,' Al Jean said.

'I really don't think he could go without eating meat on Fridays - for even an hour.'

Mr Jean pointed out that the Simpson family attends the First Church of Springfield 'which is decidedly Presbylutheran'.

The video makes it quite clear that the Simpsons are NOT Catholic.

And here I always thought the Pope was infallible!
