Bluelamp, Wow...I'm really surprised to see Rabbi Michael Lerner's name on that list. I'm very familiar with his work, of course, but as founder of the Network of Spiritual Progressives and longtime, tireless advocate of peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians than for any involvement with New Age/Science crossover stuff. The book commonly called the "Book of Enoch" has been part of Ethiopian Orthodox scripture all along. There is also a different one in Slavonic, and yet a third one in Hebrew, none of which as far as I can tell have been missing for centuries. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_of_Enoch -- Stephen |

Bluelamp's link leads eventually to The Kybalion, a small book, written in 1912, to explain the Hermetic teachings. It squares with informed lay understanding of science in the early 20th century, which seems archaic now. What I find most puzzling about it is the failure of the Kybalion to understand that "The All" (a name for God) also is evolving. As in most religions God is implicitly required to remain unchanged eternally. Seán |

Stephen, Thanks for the Wikipedia link...you are right and I stand corrected. I guess I was just flying on automatic pilot. I repeated the last thing I read about the Book of Enoch, without checking to make sure it was accurate. I am NOT an expert on that particular text and I've only read about it. I haven't actually read the Book of Enoch itself. But even from reading about it, I should have remembered that the Book of Enoch is part of the Bruce Codex. That's something I already knew but completely forgot about. The Scottish Explorer Bruce discovered the codex that is named for him in 1799. Sorry about the error. Here's what you get for dealing with a non-expert in the area.  I'm going to have to go back and re-read te book, since I don't think Brown even mentioned Jesus except in passing. He dealt with ancient wisdom, but not specifically Christian ancient wisdom. So I was confused at the end, when he talked about the Bible (Christian Bible?) as the literal cornerstone of the Washington Monument and the nation. John, You are right that the Christian Bible came out of the Council of Nicea, in my never-humble opinion the biggest ripoff in the history of religion. YES, it had a specific agenda, and that agenda had nothing to do with any ancient wisdom. It had EVERYTHING to do with creating a state religion for the Roman Empire...with all that implies. Stephen of course will disagree with me but he won't be surprised. He already knows how I feel about the Council of Nicea, and I haven't revised my opinion upward even an inch since the last time I spouted off about it! His church is actually a little better than the RCC in that it isn't quite so rigidly hierarchical, and it retains far more Gnostic elements (or at least Wisdom elements) than the RCC. Resurrecting this old thread. Interested to see if anyone else has read The Lost Symbol. The book has not raised the controversy of Da Vinci but is still into some pretty heavy stuff.

JohnT, It was just an incredible book, as you say. I think it was so much fun to read from beginning to end. And no...I was not familiar with Noetic Science and I've heard nothing since. I know some others who read the book and remarked about the ending, as you have. I think the most disappointing thing about the ending, if indeed it was disappointing, is that the book ended at all. I remember when astronaut Edgar Mitchell publicly announced an epiphany he experienced during the return to earth of Apollo 14. Newspaper accounts of his experience caused a brief sensation but that soon ended. He and Paul N. Temple, a lawyer who had worked in management for companies like Exxon but, at the time was operating a company that produces industrial cleaning products, founded the Institute of Noetic Sciences. This group, IONS for short, says it is dedicated to research on relationships between consciousness and matter. Their results are reported in an in-house publication called Shift Magazine, copies of which are available in .pdf version in the "Publications" section of their website. The articles are unscientific in the sense that they ignore the methodology of science. I could find no substantive contribution to the sum of knowledge they can claim after 36 years of investigating. Seán |

I received a used copy around Thanksgiving and read it. It was okay; not as engaging as The Davinci Code. (I haven't read Angels & Demons or anything else of his, so I can't compare beyond these two.) Story-wise, the twist at the end with the identity of Mal'akh and how his part concludes was kinda weak, imo. Maybe it works better on film with the visuals. The (alleged) secrets of the Masons didn't have the same oompf as the (alleged) secrets of the church. And the "noetic science" aspect was underdeveloped and unconvincing.
