Book Review: "Riding With Reindeer" by Robert Goldstein is very much an enjoyable read as you can easily savor the author's experiences as he undertakes a daunting bicycle odyssey through much of Finland to Lapland and Arctic Norway. Armed with an adventurous spirit, and a small supply-carrying cart attached to his bike, the author struggles with nature and the Finnish language to finally reach his destination near the top of the world. Far from a young man's jaunt the author is middle-aged as he ventures farther and farther north. The book is sprinkled with lively snippets of humor as well as fascinating nuggets of historical lore, especially about Finland's pair of desperate and bravely fought wars against the overwhelming might of the Soviet Union. Maps of the author's route, black and white photos, and well documented end notes round out an entertaining depiction of an unusual, true life trip in this 334-page travel paperback ($15.95, Rivendell Publishing).
