"Top Republican strategists are increasingly worried that a 2012 ticket led by former Speaker Newt Gingrich (Ga.) -- instead of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney -- could hurt the party downballot, especially in the Northeast. The region is expected to be a top battleground in the fight for control of Congress. Although redistricting has shifted many lines, in 2010 Republicans won 61 House districts carried by Barack Obama in 2008. Last year the GOP picked up 14 seats across four states: New York, New Jersey, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania. Many of those freshmen will have tough races next year in those Democratic-leaning states and need help from the top of their ticket."

Gingrich will likely lose a good portion of the nationwide evangelicals. At least one such leader appeared on "The Ed Show" yesterday (no transcript available yet). He said there's not a problem with "forgiving Gingrich", but that Newt needs to PROVE his sincerity (having faltered time & time again). IOW: there is forgiveness, but NO TRUST! He also said the GOP needs an HONEST CANDIDATE (as is/has been Obama) if the CONS want to win in 2012.

Gingrich is just the guy to unify the Republican Party.

OTOH, Romney is just the guy to unify the Republican Party.

Don't Say Gay Bush.

Say "Obama's Predecessor," if you absolutely have to.

ROTF :rotf: Gus!

I'm waiting for the "The Ed Show" text transcript from Wednesday/14 December 2011... to post verbatim some of what this evangelical leader said. But I particularly liked the stuff I posted, from memory, as:
quote:
He also said the GOP needs an HONEST CANDIDATE (as is/has been Obama) if the CONS want to win in 2012.
1. admission that Obama is HONEST -- i.e., he promised to do things, and he done them (then again, he broke a promise or two, but for the most part he was honest).

2. but if the CONS have to run an HONEST CANDIDATE, in order to win... they're just **** out of luck! Wink ;)

the transcript is now available, here's the beginning of the "evangelical" portion:
quote:
REV. CARY GORDON, CORNERSTONE WORLD OUTREACH:

The other issue that seems to be out there is that Newt is trustworthy because he`s repented and he said he was sorry. And the thing that evangelicals in particular have to remember is that the same Bible that teaches us to forgive people when they do wrong also warns us that if we trust someone until they have earned it, or before they`ve earned it, we`re being foolish and presumptuous.

And so, when Newt says, I`m sorry, forgive me, I can say, sure, I forgive you but I don`t trust you.

My message to Newt Gingrich and my warning to evangelical voters is Newt needs to be told to run for mayor, run for Congress again. Get some time and prove to us that you`re a changed man.

I don`t trust him because his record is abysmal. And I feel the same way about Mitt Romney. Mitt Romney flips and flops on the issues. Neither one of these people can be trusted.

Another thing to remember, I want a level playing field when we come up with Obama. Obama said what he was going to do when he ran for office. Then after he was elected, he`s done his very best to do what he said he was going to do.

I want the GOP to present an honest candidate that will do the same thing, because I don`t think we`re going to beat Obama if Obama is honest and we put some hollow personally driven person that wants power and prestige in the challenge.
