Mitt Romney's 'poor' choice of words: Who's really struggling in America?
Mitt Romney was in damage-control mode Wednesday after the multimillionaire candidate said he's 'not concerned about the very poor.' He said he's concerned about those who are 'struggling.' Richie Rich blows it again. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |

Maybe so, but we know what Romney really meant.

Exactly. This wasn't some sort of isolated gaffe by Romney. He has great esteem for corporations and nothing but contempt for the little people who aren't country club material. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Republicans' main complaint is that President Obama hasn't done a good enough job cleaning up Bush's mess. This is the kind of gotcha politics I very much dislike. It is out of context and only part of the sentence. He said he wasn't concerned BECAUSE there was a safety net for the poorest. That was a fair statement. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In a time of universal deceit telling the truth is a revolutionary act. |

No, that's not what he said. That's how he tried to fix what he said. Further, safety net notwithstanding (which the right is continually trying to cut back on anyway), the poor aren't exactly "coasting." Plus, does he not understand that the middle class folks that he claims to be interested in are just one lost job away from being poor and off his radar screen? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ “What a shame that time passes, don’t you think? Oh Doug, just for once, could you not start your hyper-sensitive BS telling me I should check first? I didn't have to check because I heard the whole thing from the beginning. He was not quoted out of context -- try as he might to offer that as an explanation. The so-called context does not help him is what his problem is.
Directing the very poor to the "safety net" is like telling them to eat cake. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ “What a shame that time passes, don’t you think? Hypersensitive? That's crap. It was just as I said. That was his statement. You sure are acting like one arrogant *****. You SHOULD check before jumping on people and telling them they are wrong when YOU are wrong. Do other people let you get away with that crap? If so they are likely laughing behind your back. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In a time of universal deceit telling the truth is a revolutionary act. |

My goodness, Doug! Muy sensitivo! Can I offer you a mint or something?
Meanwhile... Mitt screwed up. He's busy trying to fix things by claiming it's fine for him not to care about the poor because the safety net is so fabulous and to the extent it's not, he'll fix it. That's BS. The GOP has been dismantling the safety net for years, and Mitt's polices will do more of the same. And jeez, Doug. You're beginning to sound like Why with your impotent lashing out. I suggest you learn how to soldier on. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ “What a shame that time passes, don’t you think? Not only is Romney unconcerned about the poor, his "Ryan Plan" policy proposals would gut the the safety nets they rely on - food stamps, Medicaid, etc.

Good that they retracted it. The original "reporting" was simply indefensible. Gallup State Numbers hint at huge Obama loss. http://campaign2012.washington...ge-obama-loss/352881 I expect the race to tighten as the election draws closer. |

Chango, exactly. I've been hearing Mitt's "quote" all day long, and I've never heard it "out of context." So, it's not so much that people aren't hearing the whole quote as that, from Mitt's point of view, people aren't hearing it and interpreting it the way he'd like them to.
He's upset that people are understanding what he said as: "Our sorry excuse for a safety net is fine for such inferior folk as 'the poor.' Hey, at least it's better than a roach motel, right? So why should I worry about them? It's not like they vote, for pete's sake." He'd like us to believe he meant: "My heart is eternally grateful that the poor have a safety net. Therefore, I will concern myself with -- and my heart will bleed for -- the middle class." Bah! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ “What a shame that time passes, don’t you think? He isn't a Washington insider, so he hasn't mastered the sound byte. It's a trade off. Romney has real flaws as a candidate, but he has a lot to offer as well. We will see how he develops. The smart money is certainly on Obama for a narrow win. We do have a solid opportunity to come out of this election with the US Senate, certainly a good thing. If we can pick up the Presidency as well, so much the better. Certainly the conditions in this country are not optimal, maybe giving a Moderate Republican like Mitt a chance to turn things around might be exactly what this country needs. |

"The issue here is not that Romney is right or wrong, but that he is handing choice sound bites to the Democrats to make him as unlikeable as he made Newt Gingrich," said Erick Erickson on the conservative RedState blog. And Jonah Goldberg at the conservative National Review Online said of Romney: "Every time he seems to get into his groove and pull away he says things that make people think he doesn't know how to play the game."

What Romney said --in context and the whole thing, not just the sound bite-- is right up there with when Bush said America's safety net was sufficient because "churches and charitable organizations" would take up the slack. *CJ |
