Is this guy completely crazy? Now he wants to do away with unionized labor and hire kids from 9-14 years of age to do the work instead. He is also an advocate for firing unionized school janitors and hiring kids to do the work. Ah yes, I can see it now....as if there weren't enough bullying to worry about in the schools these days, we are going to put part of the students to work so the wealthier kids can have someone to hassle.

This man is a complete idiot and takes "out of touch" to a new level.

I can't think of any other recent Republican politician who has come up with anything this dumb: not Goldwater, not Nixon, not Reagan, not even Cheney.

The Republicans' main complaint is that President Obama hasn't done a good enough job cleaning up Bush's mess.

Full moon for the Cinco de Mayo this year. Listen to the Republicans howl!

“It is tragic what we do in the poorest neighborhoods, entrapping children in child laws which are truly stupid,” Gingrich said. “Saying to people you shouldn’t go to work before you’re 14, 16. You’re totally poor, you’re in a school that’s failing with a teacher that’s failing. I tried for years to have a very simple model. These schools should get rid of unionized janitors, have one master janitor, pay local students to take care of the school. The kids would actually do work; they’d have cash; they’d have pride in the schools. They’d begin the process of rising. Go out and talk to people who are really successful in one generation. They all started their first job at 9 to 14 years of age. They are selling newspapers, going door to door, washing cars. They were all making money at a very young age. What do we say to poor kids in poor neighborhoods? Don’t do it.

So what? Did someone who needed the job to feed his family get fired so you could have the job at a lower salary? That's old Newtie's idea of how to save tax dollars. Are you fricken kidding me?

I babysat from the time I was eleven years old. Constantly.

There are many jobs for kids - yard work for neighbors, babysitting, etc. WITHOUT having to be janitors in their schools which is not only foolish but a dangerous pursuit for children whose health and safety consciousness is not as highly developed as their adult counterparts.

What a stupid idea.

Newt is losing it.

I have known several janitors at the schools that I attended. I know of several injuries due to slips, One was bitten by a black widow spider while on the job. It is not a job for children.
And newt is an idiot.

I loved it. I am no longer eleven years-old and I don't live in CA by choice.

Apparently Zorro neglected to read the topic post. Obviously Gingrich’s plan would need to include firing unionized school janitors and hiring poor minority children as scabs. Gingrich then said that these children would work under a “ massa Master janitor.”

Of course such peons would be happy with low wages and not make demands for health insurance, holidays, retirement and other benefits.

Smacks of 'servitude' to me (13th Amendment).

It's hard to believe Zorro is advocating such stupidity, except that when he chooses a Candidate to follow, he does so rather blindly. Roll Eyes  Remember Fred Thompson who could do no wrong? Unfortunately Fred couldn't do much of anything. Oh and then there was St. Sarah of the frozen northland who killed moose with her bare hands and delivered her children sideways alone in the wilderness.

Zorro do you just come out of the bat cave once in a while to smell the air. Lots of people still allow their kids to babysit at 11 or 12 years old. I don't think this is covered by any CA state law. I believe this was founded for the appalling situation with migrant farm workers children working 10-12 hours in the hot sun earning minimum wage.

YOu throw stuff out there so randomly, it causes one to wonder what you REALLY do read.

So the conclusion is that we should bring back child labor?

REad the piece I posted Righty. We are not talking about the lunch duty that some kids got when they attended elementary school. This article refers to the suggestion Gingrich made about laying off the current janitors and turning the kids from low income families into the janitors. He thinks it's a cost-effective plan, but with no thought to the janitor who has worked for the school district for 20 years and needs his salary to pay his bills and feed his family. Also, this would enable the government to dismantle the unions that organize for these said janitors.

PLUS, who wants to be the Master janitor/Jailer that oversees these said "youth janitors". I've worked with kids long enough to know; that Master janitor may want to ask for extra combat pay because the first time you try to tell a 12 yr. old to clean a toilet, things may go flying.

This is just another stupid idea thrown out there to get his name in the paper. Gingrich is no rookie to national politics. He and Bachmann both know that the more ridiculous the ideas are that they feed to the media, the more attention they'll get on a national level. You don't hear much from Ron Paul or Jon Huntsman do you?
Well, I may disagree with some of their politics, but I respect them for not going the "get attention at all costs" route. They'll lose the battle for it, but they can walk away with some dignity.

Working as a high school cafeteria cashier to "pay" for your school lunches?

That's just one of the reasons why the (Richard Russell [D-GA]) National School Lunch Program (NSLP) was enacted in 1946... so kids could attend classes -and- eat, without having to work in school.

The NSLP also helps absorb domestic agriculture surplus, keeping prices stable.

You & your ilk have a long standing history of not supporting programs that benefit children in this country... so are you also against programs that helps farmers to keep them from watching their product rot in their fields and starve on the hoof?

And now we are feeding kids three meals a day. How far are we going to take it?
