The Chevy Volt, President Obama and Rush Limbaugh

Electric cars are a boondoggle according to Rush Limbaugh – “nothing more than an expensive way to promote the environmentalist agenda,” as Politico.com summarized Limbaugh’s views on such vehicles. Rush has singled out the Chevy Volt, a car he claims has limited technology and a steep price tag. Limbaugh seems unable to grasp the fact that over time technology improves and becomes far more affordable. The first cell phone, for example, cost $4,000, weighed two pounds and could only go 30 minutes on a charge, according to msnbc.com. Nowadays, cell phones weigh just ounces and are given out for free by service providers.

I’ll bet that back in the 1980s, before he was famous, Rush probably marveled at the brick-sized cell phone used by Michael Douglas’ character Gordon Geckko in the movie “Wall Street." Rush probably pulled out his three-pound, first-generation handheld calculator, did the math, and concluded that only rich Wall St. titans like Gekko could ever hope to afford big, cumbersome cell phone technology.

On the way home, Rush likely bemoaned the fact that he’ll have to shell out money for movie tickets for the rest of his life since devices that allow people to watch movies at home were rather expensive and would always be that way. Good thing it was a short trip, because his bulky Walkman only stored a single cassette tape - not that portable music devices could ever be capable of storing thousands of songs and fit in the palm of your hand or anything.

Once home, Rush no doubt sat down to play Pong on his TV, thinking how unfortunate it is that video games will never catch on because the graphics would always be so crummy. But, hey, it beat watching television since it could never be possible for a TV to get more than just the same four old channels.

The Nissan Leaf is a lot cheaper than The Volt and will go twice as far on a charge.

SO, as an avid follower of Rush Limbaugh, are you implying that he wants us all to buy foreign electric cars (rather than American)? I don't get that impression at all...

And yet another question goes unanswered, by F.Righty?!

Furthermore; with either vehicle, "range" is not an issue, for the normal "commute". However; should you want to take a 150 mile (300 mile round-trip) trip, you'd have to stop at least twice, along the way, to recharge the "leaf". The "volt" OTOH would make the trip, utilizing a gasoline powered generator to power its electric motor.

Chevy Volt and Nissan Leaf: Two different approaches

When choosing a car that is more eco friendly it has always been the Toyota Prius for most, but there are two new boys about to hit the market, and both have a different approach. In one corner we have the Chevy Volt and in the other we have the Nissan Leaf.

General Motors did not want to rely on just an electric motor with the Chevrolet Volt, so decided to add a gasoline engine into the design. The Volt has a total range of 340 miles – 40 of those will be done with the electric motor.

This type of car is different to a hybrid, as that will use the gas engine once you reach a certain speed – the Volt will only use the electric motor until the batteries are spent. This is not a bad thing, as most Americans never travel more than 40 miles on a round trip to work. Once you get home you just plug your Chevy Volt in and charge it ready for your next journey.

Nissan has gone for a full electric vehicle, as they feel that this is the future of cars and we should embrace it. The electric motor produces 107hp and has a 0 to 60 time of just under 10 seconds and a top speed of 90mph. The range of the EV is 100 miles. However, once you run out of charge you have no gas engine to help you out.

The Nissan Leaf will be perfect for those who leave in urbanized and city areas, as there will be a number of charging stations placed in certain locations.

We reported in a recent post that the Chevy Volt would begin at $41,000 – although there is $7,500 to be taken off that figure for federal tax credit. The Nissan leaf is to cost $32.780, we are not certain how much federal relief this car will get.

<...snip...>
What I don't get is why any U.S. government (federal or state) would subsidize a foreign car maker's sales. I wouldn't want either one, personally I would prefer a HYDROGEN-fuel-celled/electric... or even a straight HYDROGEN burner (such as the BMW H7). Why? Because "electric" vehicles are problematic where recycling and dependence on OIL are concerned (i.e., where does the "recharging" energy come from?). Technological advances mean that HYDROGEN vehicles can be refueled at home (no need for "filling/charging" stations scarring our streets and highways, while taking up a whole lot of "prime" real estate in the process).
