After Newt Gingrich was declared the winner of the South Carolina primary Saturday night, Karl Rove suggested that the candidate has CNN’s John King to thank for his victory in the Palmetto State.

“Taking on the media is always good in a Republican primary,” Rove said on Fox News. “John King couldn’t have set up the question in a more positive way for Gingrich to just nail it and haul it right out of the park.”

All true . . . all true, but it was a set up. Right-wing Republicans are so easily manipulated by the mainstream media.

Of course, CNN, John King, and the rest of the mainstream media want the GOP to nominate Gingrich. Gingrich can't win. Gingrich is running 11 points behind Obama.

Where is rockstarr when we really need him?

Of the three races so far - Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina - none of them has been decisive. By decisive, I mean, one candidate winning a majority vote.

I do love the sound of Republicans eating each other. Sounds like Victory!

South Carolina is still fighting the War Between the States.
I spent a week in Charleston recently. Great food, fabulous old-money homes.
But the restaurant wait staff working the customers are White. The Blacks are kept in the kitchen out of sight.
South Carolinians aren't happy an uppity Black man is President.
The South's gonna rise again!

Newton didn't win South Carolina - Willard lost it

Newt Gingrich will deny it, but the South Carolina vote was really a referendum on Romney. He lost it because he is slipping in the area that was previously his one selling point: electability. The Bain mess and his absent tax returns were compounded by the overturning of his “victory” in Iowa. Without the illusion of being unbeatable, there is no reason for conservatives to vote for Romney. Crucially, they told exit pollers that they now believe Newt is more likely to win against Obama than Mitt in November. That’s an illusion, too. But when you hate someone as much as some sections of the Tea Party hate Romney, you don’t see them as they really are. Poor Romney has become, unfairly, a stand in for all the elitism and bad faith of the Republican establishment. He has a tough fight ahead.

If that's true the anti-Romney votes should've been distributed more or less evenly among Newt, Ron Paul and Rick Santorum.

TFQ -- that leaves out a kind of important step, which is that conservs keep looking for one candidate to get behind as the anti-Romney. I keep good-naturedly twitting Florida Righty about his promise to vote for Cain in the Florida primary, and maybe he still will, but he's not really obligated to. (I realize that if he doesn't, this makes him a lying sack of crap by Zorro's standards, but I don't accept Zorro's standards.) More likely, like many conservs, he got excited by Cain as the best shot to beat Romney, then saw Cain's light flicker, and moved on to someone else. People have every right to do that.

But actually...if you count the last three GOP primaries, the anti-Romney votes have been pretty much divided between Gingrich, Santorum and Paul.

I don't know about that. Gingrich throws red meat to the fundamentalist hordes. First, he put the ******, Juan Williams, in his place, and then he put John King in his place.

Gingrich is a better debater than any of his rivals. He may be a polygamist, but he's not a Mormon or a RINO. The right wants to coalesce around a single candidate who can debate toe to toe against Obama. Ron Paul will never do, and Santorum wasn't re-elected in Pennsylvania.

So who are you going to vote for in the primary?

Who is Florida Righty going to vote for?

I would agree with that.

If Gingrich is the nominee, Obama will avoid debate with him so vigorously he will make Newt look like he's got Ebola. Romney already dodged a planned meeting at some breakfast place. The problem is, Newt would make that tactic backfire too because Newt is beginning to emerge as a true populist.

Oh, I don't think Obama will avoid the debate. There might not be a debate, however, if Trump or some other third party candidate jumps in and the major parties quibble over whether to include the third party candidate. That's why there was only one debate in 1980 and no debates in 1968.

Tell me this, tenderfoot, have people in Florida ever heard of the Cayman Islands?

Whoever the GOP sends to debate Obama is going to be surprised to find the real man facing him instead of the ridiculous straw man they've concocted in the GOP debates.

Actually, you gotta love it. The same people who used to say "if he'll cheat on his wife, that proves he'll cheat on the country" are now saying -- and I ain't making this up -- "if he's that attractive to women, that means he'll be attractive as a president."

Most of us are old enough to remember when simply having a divorce was thought to be an major impediment to being elected President, e.g. Nelson Rockefeller.

LOL!

Yeah that is what I think too, if Gingrich is the nominee, there will be no series of debates with Obama, but like everything else, this won't be Obama's fault.

The literati sent out their minions to do their bidding. Washington cannot tolerate threats from outsiders who might disrupt their comfortable world. The firefight started when the cowardly sensed weakness. They fired timidly at first, then the sheep not wanting to be dropped from the establishment's cocktail party invite list unloaded their entire clip, firing without taking aim their distortions and falsehoods. Now they are left exposed by their bylines and handles. But surely they had killed him off. This is the way it always worked. A lesser person could not have survived the first few minutes of the onslaught. But out of the billowing smoke and dust of tweets and trivia emerged Gingrich, once again ready to lead those who won't be intimated by the political elite and are ready to take on the challenges America faces.

That said, those writing Romney's obit are probably being a bit hasty. Gingrich is a much better fit for SC than Romney.

I don't know what Gingrich has in the way of organization and ground gain.
