Obama Sees Auto Revival as a Success

quote:
In Detroit, Mr. Obama enthusiastically accentuated the positive and got a rousing reception from autoworkers whose jobs were recently in jeopardy. He emphasized that the economy had grown in the last quarter, making for a full year of growth; it had been shrinking at the rate of about 6 percent a quarter when he took office. And he told an estimated 1,500 union workers at each of the auto plants that they had “vindicated” his belief that the widely unpopular bailout would work.

The president — showing energy reminiscent of his campaign rallies — brought the workers at both plants to their feet, applauding and cheering, when he concluded: “Don’t bet against the American worker. Don’t bet against the American people.”

-snip-
“I want you to remember, though, that if some folks had their way, none of this would have been happening,” he said. “This plant and your jobs might not exist.”

Afterward, workers were happy to tell reporters their stories of newfound hope, even some who had not supported Mr. Obama. “There’s still a little fear here,” said Peter Orlando, 46, a Chrysler worker who identified himself as a political independent. “But a little fear is a good thing” to motivate people, he said. Naming Southern senators who opposed the bailout, he added, “The people that nay-sayed us, I’d like them to come and work in our shoes for eight hours.”

We told you so!

I see Ford as a success, and Obama has absolutely nothing to do with that.

Then I suppose you'll appreciate that Obama wasn't at a Ford plant... Obama spoke at GM & Chrysler plants.

Not true. The cash for clunkers helped Ford as well.

That would be like acknowledging that Bush saved the Banks so people get loans to buy cars.

I suppose not giving Obama credit is racist of me? ROTF :rotf:

He dismissed critics of the bailout as the "just-say-no crowd in Washington." He noted that GM, Chrysler and Ford a year later all are posting profits, and he told the Volt makers that "you're producing the cars of the future."

Still, the roughly 334,000 jobs the industry lost in the year before it emerged from bankruptcy have had a severe impact on the work force, and the long-term comeback plan for American carmakers is uncertain.

There are many critics of the Volt, as well, who say it's too expensive and insufficiently advanced to compete. "GM's Electric Lemon" was the headline on a piece in The New York Times' opinion section Friday.

The subject line is 'Obama declares victory on auto bailouts'... and well he should as the Big Three --GM, Chrysler & Ford-- all, in one way or another, greatly benefited from Obama's economic policies.

Anything else is negative fluff from the obstructionists.

Why is Ford selling more cars than anyone else? Smile :) You can give the credit to Obama, but rational people know better.

Ford benefitted from their own policies of making better cars.
Ford -also- benefited from Obama's economic policies. As Doug pointed out, Cash for Clunkers was a huge benefit to all automakers, including Ford:Apparently it just grinds your gears that good ol' Ford benefited from Obama's policies, so why not just read it (and please, feel free to do your own investigation), then accept it and move on?

From another BB:
GM would not exist without the actions of Obama. Ford benefited greatly from the government actions, from Cash for Clunkers to the fact that GM closing (and maybe Chevy) would have hammered their suppliers.

The words you are looking for are: Excellent job, Mr. President. Thank you for your leadership in protecting a major American industry and so many tens of thousands of American jobs.
Right on!

Excellent job, Mr Mulally. Smile :) Ford may have benefitted from cash for cluckers, but they didn't depend on it. People are buying Fords now cause they build better cars. You libs can pat yourselves on the back all you want, but rational people know better.

I have said this before! Good for Ford!

And no one is praising GM or Chrysler for their incompetent management which went on for years until it caught up with them. In a lot of ways, they brought this on themselves. Remember Michael Moore's "Roger and Me"?

I can only hope that their are enough strings on the bailout to make management fix the ship.

But the sad fact is that we are talking about hundreds of thousands of jobs that would be lost if these giant corporations were allowed to go under.
Would Ford absorb all are even many of these jobs? And would having Ford as the only viable producer of autos be a good thing?

You know who would benefit. Toyota, Honda, Mitsubishi, Kia.....
