The Vatican is getting pretty radical in its old age. Their Justice and Peace Department issued a report today entitled: "Towards Reforming the International Financial and Monetary Systems in the Context of a Global Public Authority." It's kind of far to the left.
quote:
It called for the establishment of “a supranational authority” with worldwide scope and “universal jurisdiction” to guide economic policies and decisions.

Asked at a news conference if the document could become a manifesto for the movement of the “indignant ones”, who have criticised global economic policies, Cardinal Peter Turkson, head of the Vatican’s Justice and Peace department, said: “The people on Wall Street need to sit down and go through a process of discernment and see whether their role managing the finances of the world is actually serving the interests of humanity and the common good. “We are calling for all these bodies and organisations to sit down and do a little bit of re-thinking.”
The Wall Street traders are wondering why in the hell they should be worried about the interests of humanity. They're trying to make a buck.

The World would be in a lot better shape if the Catholic Church lifted it's ban on birth control.

Better watch it. The Catholic Church is a major Republican ally on the abortion issue.

It could be just a PR stunt, as one of the more cynical posters on the Booman site said. Given the Vatican's ugly history of supporting fascist governments, I tend to be pretty skeptical about this "radical" new development myself. But it's possible there's a kind of enlightened self-interest at work here. That would be a new and refreshing development in itself. I don't believe for one minute that this new position is motivated either by love for humanity or respect for democracy. The RCC historically has never shown any great love for democracy--quite the opposite, in fact. We don't need to look any further than Scalia and Alito to know the kind of government the Catholic Church favors. At least this has been true until now.

There is obviously something about the global financial situation the Vatican finds threatening to its power and prestige. This new position paper could be a response to a perceived threat of global depression leading to a global revolution, and I'm not talking about a peaceful revolution either. The Church would never survive that, especially if it were perceived as aiding and abetting the conditions that led up to it.

So I believe what we're seeing is a self-serving but basically sincere attempt to be somewhat proactive in the area of economics. In any case I really like the phrase "idolatry of the market." There's a lot of that going around these days--including on this board. You idolators know who you are!

I'm obviously just too brilliant, perceptive and far-sighted for this BB. I don't know why everyone doesn't realize that and bow down to me.

According to you, but the Roman Catholic Church opposes abortion and birth control pills.

Indeed. Too bad you're not an idolator, Linda. Pbffft. DU, anyone? Sardonic :sardonic: You are clueless as to how ridiculous you come off.

By the way, have any of you ever been to San Bernardino? There's a whole lotta REAL liberals there. LOL-2! :lol2:

You think it matters to me who you were referring to?! It does not. I am not one those people who sinks into a puddle of complacency if I imagine someone wasn't referring to me.

Sheesh!

Not projecting anything, Linda. Just sayin' it straight out like us libs are wont to do.

In fact, come to stink of it, you're the one who was projecting when you thought I thought you were referring to me.

Whew! That tuckered me out! If I still smoked, I would surely light one up now.

You Californies,

I was readin' somewhere that marijuana is already quasi-legal in California, that simple possession is only a $100 fine, and the cops may not even bother to write you up. Any truth to this?

This is true. Pot clubs abound out here, and a club card is ridiculously easy to get. It used to be you were a BMOC if you had a cool ride, but nowadays the club card is king.

Okay, you're kidding, right?

P.S. Google says you aren't! Wow. I wonder if my kids are members. <sigh>

P.P.S. Oh wait. Is this in connection with medical marijuana? And how will the new ruling on that impact this, how you say, "club card"?

Seriously, medical marijuana club cards are common up here. Further on up the coast in the Humboldt, they don't need no steenkin' club cards.

What new ruling? The Justice Dept. crackdown? I don't have any idea how that will affect things in California. I do know that the City of San Jose once had over a hundred clubs, and the city now wants to reduce that number to fifteen.

The former chef at our golf club owns one of these clubs, and grows all of his weed hydroponically. He's completely legal, too.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking of. And I assume that must be connected to the recent reduction in the number of MM dispensaries? I must admit I haven't been paying too close attention, except that I was disappointed when I heard about the Justice Dept.'s announcement that federal law will be enforced with regard to MM even where state law says it's legal. Wrong direction, boys! I guess it remains to be seen, though, what exactly that means.

Not sure if one begat the other with regard to the reduced number of mm dispensaries, but the fear around here was that since these 15 clubs would now be awarded licences to the highest bidders, the cartels and the underworld at large would move in, as in 'Bally's Bong Buds' or 'Waste-d Management'. I should say: as far as I know, they are here in Southern California too (although I don't knowingly know anyone who has one). I just got sidetracked by the word "club." I pictured a nightclub, like a speakeasy but for marijuana. It wasn't till I googled it that I realized we were talking about medical marijuana.
