On the substance, Romney has said previously he would not release the tax returns. Last night seemed to offer a different answer, though it was hard to tell exactly what the frontrunner is now prepared to do. I think the bottom line is that Romney won't rule it out, but won't disclose anything until after GOP voters give him the party's presidential nomination.
We can only speculate as to exactly why the former governor is so reluctant, but it's a pretty safe bet that Romney doesn't want the public to know he pays a lower tax rate than middle-class workers. Because Romney still collects seven-figure checks from his vulture-capitalist firm, he benefits from the "carried interest" loophole, which taxes private equity and venture capital income at a lower, 15% rate, as compared to 35% on ordinary income. As we recently discussed, it creates a dynamic that Romney would prefer to downplay: 1. Mitt Romney is worth $250 million. 2. He got rich by laying off American workers. 3. He pays a lower tax rate than you and the rest of the middle class. 4. He wants to be president so he can keep it this way. If last night was any indication, it's a subject that makes Romney uncomfortable, but it's not going away. Willard's financial disclosure forms show he and his wife have millions of dollars in offshore accounts. That's usually done to take advantage of tax loopholes--and that's going to look very bad once the details are known.

Ed Henry Asks: When Will The Brilliant Rara Avis President Be Releasing His College Transcripts?

Nobody is asking for college transcripts but right-wing wackos. If there was a tradition of doing so, I'm sure Obama would oblige, but he can't spend time trying to please the unpleasable rabble.
Tax records are an entirely different matter. Americans have a right to know if a candidate for public office has earned an honest living and paid his taxes. Romney is going to run out the clock on the nomination process, then try to get by with releasing just 2011, during which he scrupulously avoided controversy. "I'm running for public office, for Pete's sake!" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |

Yes we are. Romney has released his, but Obama is still hiding his. Why is Obama hiding his transcripts and all of his academic records? Is it because he is a borderline retard? |

You are in a tiny minority of wackos. The vast majority of Americans are content that Obama excelled in college. You don't get to be a professor with bad grades.
And his taxes are an open book back to 2000. What's Romney hiding? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |

Sure he did. That is why he is hiding his transcripts. Recent poll on Obama's Job performance: Economy Approve 41 DISAPPROVE 57 Federal Budget Deficit Approve 35 DISAPPROVE 58 Iran Approve 33 DISAPPROVE 48 http://www.washingtonpost.com/...tabcpoll_011512.html |

Another reason Romney may not be releasing his tax returns: Yahoo News ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Republicans' main complaint is that President Obama hasn't done a good enough job cleaning up Bush's mess. Full moon for the Cinco de Mayo this year. Listen to the Republicans howl! |

Has Obama released any of his transcripts yet? Romney has released all of his.

So what?
Transcripts are not relevant. Taxes are. Deceive, distort and DIVERT. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |

Yeah. Where are Obama's transcripts? Romney has released his. Why is he hiding them, isn't he claimed to be like the smartest guy ever? |

I'm guessing two things:
1) He might have taken enormous write-offs on 2008 and 2009 investment losses - that took his effective rate to single digits. 2) He mighty have sheltered money in offshore banks. But the Mormon angle is interesting. We could very well discover that he has showered money on the Mormon Church and Mormon charities alone, with very little money donated to mainstream charities and causes. There's also a very hinky deal regarding one of his houses. In order to get one of several mansions off his inventory while he runs for President (for Pete's sake!), he alleges that it belongs to his son. However, he and his wife are living there - ostensibly as house guests while their primary home is being remodeled. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |

Zorro, you keep saying Willard has released his college transcripts.
Apparently you say that because you misread what Ed Henry said once. Ed Henry said GEORGE Romney had released all his college transcripts. He never said anything about Mitt's transcripts. Source: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/...ripts_n_1211456.html I can't find Mitt's or George's transcripts. I can't find any confirmation at all about what Ed Henry said. I can't find any article showing Romney's transcripts or talking about them. That goes for either Romney. So where are they? Jeff |

We could also find that he was NOT a good Mormon and did NOT give 10% of his income to the Mormon Church. Jeff |

He says he pays about 15%, almost double the 8.2 percent average total effective tax rate of U.S. households including various tax credits, of course. http://blog.american.com/2012/...ax-rate-is-too-high/ |

Of course, many U.S. households pay zero taxes, so the average effective rate means zilch.
Romney's tax return will be a cornucopia of opposition research for his opponents. Unfortunately, the GOP opponents will not be able to avail themselves of the opportunity - just as planned. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |
|||
|
|

Indeed. Romney pays a rate of infinite magnitudes of what they pay, an about double what the average household pays. Weird thing: Back when the Dems were running Kerry/Edwards, being rich was a good thing! And have you checked out Kerrys’ curiously timed stock trades during the ObamaCare debate? Sometimes its almost like falsely pious Libs are stuttering clusterclucks of mountainous horsecrap or somethin'. http://biggovernment.com/whall...urious-stock-trades/ |

It's not going to look good to the majority of working class taxpayers that pay a higher average rate than Romney and the rest of the super rich.
Otherwise, why would Romney hesitate to show it? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |
|||

What Romney has paid in the past is only half his problem.
The other half is that his proposed tax policies would cut his future tax liabilities in half. In an election in which income inequality is going to be a heated issue, that's going to be very difficult to defend. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |

Is he? Today is January 18. 4 years ago it was March 28 before Obama released his tax returns and Hillary released hers after that. Funny thing, not a peep out of you. It's almost like Libs are lame-brained nitwits or somethin'. When is Obama going to release his transcripts? Romney already released his academic record, why is Obama still hiding his? Do they show that Obama is dumber than a box of hammers and therefore no surprise that he has been a complete flop as President? |
|||
|
|
AAA+ |
Obama had already released 8 years of tax returns, and was merely waiting to finalize 2007. I join Chris Christy in demanding to see Romney's tax records now.
College transcripts are irrelevant. Nobody cares about such things except Donald Trump and the wacko birthers. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |

He released some earlier unimportant returns in February, he didn't release his '07 returns until March 25 and Hillary didn't release hers until April 15, and funny thing? Not a peep out of you. Its almost like your manufactured outrage is a big pile of crap or somethin'. http://www.tax.com/taxcom/feat...054C6BF?OpenDocument |
