Police said they fired the tear gas on protesters in Oakland, California, after the crowd threw paint and other objects at officers.
quote:

The crowd of about 500 people defied calls to leave an area of downtown Oakland on Tuesday, according to police. Protesters had camped for weeks in several areas in the city, including near City Hall, police said.
...

"There were a series of safety conditions, including numerous reports of fighting, assault and threatening/intimidating behavior" at the camp, police said in a statement. Medical responders could not get to the scene to provide medical care on at least two occasions, and fire and police also could not get through.

"Sanitation conditions worsened with frequent instances of public urination and defecation, as well as improper food storage," the police statement said. "The existing rodent problem in the park was exacerbated, and authorities were unable to control it because of the campers' presence. Graffiti, litter and vandalism also posed problems, police said.

Whyisit,

I followed the whole ugly thing on the livestream and Twitter feeds last night. I am very familiar with the backstory and circumstances from my daughter, who lives in Berkeley and has been closely involved with Occupy Oakland when she's been in town. NO WAY is Zorro going put his lying RW b.s. over on me or anyone else. There were too many credible eyewitnesses. The City of Oakland and the OPD have nobody to blame but themselves for the ****storm they just brought down on their heads. There was talk last night of a petition to recall the mayor--for starters.

Maybe you've heard the saying: "It was worse than a sin; it was a blunder." I have a feeling that saying applies in spades here!

Do you have a bone to pick with this guy, Eff? The police, the mayor and the city council should be brought up on charges.

Looks like Villaraigosa, in Los Angeles, will be the next Democratic mayor to send cops after occupiers.

Kasim Reed in Atlanta, Jean Quan in Oakland, now this guy. Time for a pool: Which left-wing up-and-comer will be next to deploy city police against the tip of the 99-percent’s spear?

And don’t bother saying “Rahm.” I’ve already got my money on him.

You don't have your money on anyone, coward. We saw you in action in '06 when your nutty predictions came back to embarrass you and bite you in the ass.

WHAT “ECONOMIC JUSTICE” SMELLS LIKE:
quote:

“Without running water or working toilets, the crowded anti-Wall Street encampments across the country are not the most pleasant-smelling places to live. Nor are they quiet, with drumming and chanting echoing through the air at all hours of the night. That’s why police and neighbors in some cities are starting to lose patience with the protesters, who are preparing to settle in for the winter months.”
