Those diesel-electrics are noisy as hell and, of course, they have to surface every day. I don't know what kind of engines the Iranians have, but U.S. World War II vintage subs, e.g. Gato class or Balao class, used railroad locomotive diesel engines.

Diesel electrics are a LOT quieter than a nuke plant cycling water into a steam turbine. But they can sustain underwater for a limited amount of time until they need to charge batteries with surfacing and running diesels. They are not so quiet then.

A Virginia class can shut it's reactor down and run on batteries making it even quieter than running on atoms. Of course, sooner or later it has to crank the reactor back up but the tactic is to reserve the battery power for the time when ultra stealth is most necessary. Like when poking holes in the hulls of fine diesel electrics.

There are rumors of a new type of torpedo, a super cavitating weapon that reaches speeds of up to 100 knots underwater and does not carry a warhead necessarily, but rather becomes a penetrating pin, not too much different than an armor piercing tank round. There would be no huge underwater explosion but a large release of kinetic energy within the hull of the target. The engine room at the rear or the conning tower or the forward torpedo room could be hit, possibly not even sinking the sub, just rendering it useless.

Accidents can happen. Kind of like nuclear scientists just die.

Pretty scary looking, but not as intimidating as you might imagine. how have they solved the targeting problem... not to mention a relatively short range of 200 km. Guidance to a mobile target is a difficult problem to solve. In marine cases, targeting is usually done by airborn radar. Iran would be hard pressed to keep radar airborn.

Operates similar to the Exocet. Targeted before launch and then within a short range it switches to on board search and destroy.
