Wash Post Editorial
quote:

... A report by the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service shows that, between 1996 and 2006, the share of total after-tax income attributable to dividends and capital gains grew by 40 percent, faster than any other category. Earned mostly by the well-to-do, investment income was the largest contributor to the increase in income inequality between 1996 and 2006, according to CRS.

The tax cuts enacted at the urging of President George W. Bush magnified what CRS calls the “disequalizing” impact of this shift. The 1986 tax reform eliminated the gap between the ordinary and capital gains rates. The gap began to widen again during President Bill Clinton’s second term, but the Bush tax cuts of 2003 blew it wide open by slicing the top rate on dividends and long-term capital gains from 28 percent to 15 percent. The tax code as of 2006 was still progressive, in that top earners paid a greater share of their income to Washington than everyone else. But thanks largely to the more favorable treatment of investment income, the code was significantly less progressive in 2006 than it was in 1996, CRS found.

The aforementioned report
quote:

... The U.S. system is progressive in that the average tax rate increases as income increases, which
tends to decrease inequality of after-tax income. In the decade between 1996 and 2006, however,
there was a relatively large decrease in average tax rates for tax filers at the top of the income
distribution. Consequently, the tax system in 2006 was less progressive than in 1996. ...
...
... [T]he 2001 and 2003 Bush tax cuts, while reducing taxes for almost all tax filers,
reduced taxes for high-income tax filers to a greater extent than for lower-income tax filers.
Changes in income from capital gains and dividends were the single largest contributor to rising
income inequality between 1996 and 2006. ...

The only reason the Bush taxcuts didn't expire, is because the Democrats repassed them, and Obama re-signed them into Law.

Not the point.

When you derail information to serve your own infantile nonsensical purposes, you remind me of the student who went to see his teacher and said, "Teacher, I don't think I deserve this zero on my exam."

Neither do I, "said the teacher, "but it's the lowest grade I can give.

Tell me Zorro, how does it feel to be utterly worthless?

Sure it is. Dumb Dems want to continue to sob over the Bush taxcuts when the only reason the Bush Taxcuts are still in force is because the Dems passed them and Obama signed them into law.

Zorro, I defy you to stay on topic. What is there in the CRS report or the Post editorial that is factually in error?

If the Bush taxcuts are not the issue, then your title is a monument to stupidity.

Does it really make sense for Libs to whine about the Bush taxcuts when the only reason they are still the law of the land is because the Democrats repassed them, and Obama re-signed them into law?

Sometimes its almost like Libs are flippin retards or somethin'.

Yes, the Bush tax cuts, particularly on unearned income, are a principle reason for the spike in income inequality. It's too bad that Obama had to temporarily extend the income tax cuts to get 85% of what he wanted in a second stimulus, but that's going away soon.

No he didn't. All he had to do was ask the House and Senate to pass a bill with what he wanted, sign it and allow the Bush taxcuts to expire.

But he never asked for such a bill, and neither House of Congress ever passed such a bill, did they?

He negotiated a deal in which he and working Americans got 85% of the benefit, but it was the Republicans that put the tax cuts for the rich on the table.

It's been their baby all the way, but it's going away soon.

Where he repassed the Bush Taxcuts.

If he and the Democrats only wanted 85% of the Bush taxcuts, they could have simply passed that through both Houses, had Obama sign that and let the Bush taxcuts expire.

But the House never did that, did they?
Not in 4 years under Pelosi did they do that did they?

Not in the 2 years while Pelosi ran the House and Obama would have signed it, did they pass that did they?

Nope. They repassed the FULL Bush Taxcuts and Obama signed them into law.

It wasn't his preference to extend the Bush tax cuts for the rich. He gave that to the Republicans in exchange for a second stimulus that they would not have otherwise approved.

You know that perfectly well, but choose instead to deceive, distort and divert.

Sure, with Obama, its always someone elses fault. He had to sign the bill the House passed and the only bill the House passed despite having a near Super-Majority of Democrats, was the entire Bush Taxcuts.

Interestingly, Obama never asked them to pass anything else.

So the fact remains, the House repassed the Bush taxcuts, and Obama signed them.

And look at how upset PP is, is he turning his face into hamburger.

You think the Democrats wanted the Tax Cuts for the rich and would have passed them without the extortion from the Republican minority?
ROTF :rotf: WOW You live in a funny reality of your own delusions.

Do you honestly think you are fooling anybody but yourself?

Yes, extending the tax cuts for the rich was entirely a Republican effort. That's all they wanted in exchange for a second stimulus, and that's what they got.

Pelosi
quote:

It takes 218 votes to pass a bill through the House, and Pelosi had 255 Democrats, so not only didn't she need any Republicans to pass the mythical bill you claim they really wanted, she didn't even need 37 of her own Democrat votes. This is simply math yet it seems beyond you. Are all Libs this stupid or are you a special case?

It was a Republican idea, granted in exchange for support of a second stimulus.

Are all right-wing wackos liars, or just you?

It was a Republican idea

Sure, the GOP had their idea, and 178 votes
the Dems had their idea, and 255 votes

You need 218 votes to prevail...

So Dems "felt forced" to fold and go with the GOP idea? LOL! LOL!

It is sure is luck for Dems that their constituents are blithering idiots! LOL!

Because no one with a brain in their heads would even begin to think you would be dumb enough to fall for that "explanation" of why the Libs repassed the Bush taxcuts and Obama signed them into law.

LOL!

No one with a brain believes the Democrats wanted to extend the tax cuts for the rich. They did it to appease the Republicans in order to get a stimulus package past the GOP filibuster in the Senate.

They were holding the unemployment compensation extension hostage as well.

Real bummer that Libs squandered their SuperMajority in the Senate while they had it. All that time, but Libs never got around to it.

LOL!

I think that one pushed the compromise because it was expiring.
