Al Gore Said North Pole Would Be Completely Melted This Year… Guess Not, Huh?
quote:

Junk scientist Al Gore predicted in 2009 that the North Polar Ice Cap would be completely ice free in five years.
...
Former Vice President Al Gore references computer modeling to suggest that the north polar ice cap may lose virtually all of its ice within the next seven years. “Some of the models suggest that there is a 75 percent chance that the entire north polar ice cap, during some of the summer months, could be completely ice-free within the next five to seven years,” says Gore.

The Goracle made the same prediction to a German audience in 2008. He told them that “the entire North ‘polarized’ cap will disappear in 5 years.”

This wasn’t the first time Gore made his ice-free prediction. Gore’s been predicting this since 2007. That means that this year the North Pole should be completely melted.

Now for a little reality…

Jan. 6, 2012: The Coast Guard Cutter Healy breaks ice around the Russian-flagged tanker Renda 250 miles south of Nome. The Healy is the Coast Guard’s only currently operating polar icebreaker. The vessels are transiting through ice up to five-feet thick in this area. The 370-foot tanker Renda will have to go through more than 300 miles of sea ice to get to Nome, a city of about 3,500 people on the western Alaska coastline that did not get its last pre-winter fuel delivery because of a massive storm.

Guess Gore was wrong, huh?

No, he didn't say that at all. He said SOME models SUGGEST this might happen with a 75% (not a 100%) probability. It wasn't his claim--he was quoting a respected scientist.

quote:
Al Gore's citation of a scientist predicting an ice-free Arctic within a decade appears to have been accurate. It appears the scientist Gore cited, Dr. Wieslav Maslowski, did in fact make this prediction and it was published on December 2, 2009 by the Danish Climate Centre, lending support to Gore's claim that the “figures are fresh.”

On December 14, former Vice President Al Gore told the UN climate summit that the Arctic could be ice free within a decade. “These figures are fresh. Some of the models suggest to Dr [Wieslav] Maslowski that there is a 75 per cent chance that the entire north polar ice cap, during the summer months, could be completely ice-free within five to seven years,” Gore said.

But Dr. Maslowski essentially threw Gore under the bus, according to a December 15, 2009 article in the UK Times:

“However, the climatologist whose work Mr. Gore was relying upon dropped the former Vice-President in the water with an icy blast. 'It's unclear to me how this figure was arrived at,” Dr. Maslowski said. 'I would never try to estimate likelihood at anything as exact as this.' Mr. Gore's office later admitted that the 75 per cent figure was one used by Dr. Maslowski as a 'ballpark figure' several years ago in a conversation with Mr. Gore.” The UK Times characterized it as Gore's "embarrassing error."

But Climate Depot has obtained a handout on the Arctic that is being distributed by the Danish government that cites Dr. Maslowski's Arctic modeling and it appears to vindicate Gore's citation of Dr. Maslowski. The December 2, 2009 handout, published by the Danish Climate Centre is entitled “FreshNor The freshwater budget of the Nordic Seas.”

The Danish Climate Centre's brochure cites Maslowski's models and claims and reaches nearly the same conclusion as Gore: “Projecting the trend into the future indicates that autumn could become near ice free between 2011 and 2016 (Maslowski, 2009).” This appears to vindicate Gore's assertions during his UN speech that Maslowski had made such a prediction. Maslowski is a research professor with the Department of Oceanography at the Navy Post Graduate School in Monterey, CA. [Climate Depot Editor's Note: The "prediction" of an ice-free Arctic is not "evidence" of anything other than an apparent attempt to gain media attention by Maslowski and Gore. When real world data fails to scare, make an alarming prediction. See: Arctic sea Ice GROWS by 'area one and a half times the size of Texas' – Sept. 20, 2009 & NYT: 'Spread of Thicker Arctic Ice Seen Last Summer' -- 'A substantial expansion of the extent of 'second year ice' - Oct. 6, 2009]

It appears that far from just a “'ballpark figure' several years ago in a conversation with Mr. Gore,” that Maslowski has indeed made this (nearly ) ice-free Arctic prediction much more formally and in model studies. Gore's version of events appears to be accurate, while Maslowski appears to be the one who has the explaining to do.

Climate Depot contacted Maslowski about this controversy but had not received a reply by press time.

Notice the hedges in Gore's statement: "some suggest" "nearly" "possibly" "could be"

Naturally, the biased sources you love ignore all the hedges and pretend Gore had made an absolute statement of some sort. He never did. Your subject title is misleading--and as usual I have to conclude that it's misleading on purpose. Shame on you, once again.

The math that describes the complex system of the harmonic progression of the orbital perihelion of the Earth (we are at perihelion now in January) ... as well as the axial precession of the Earth, the precession of the equinox is known as Milankovitch cycles and Gore probably had a silly computational error in the integrals he was working out.

GFY. He is a babbling idiot, he completely blew it, you are using the wiesel word defense to defend him, by claiming my claim was dishonest. Gore is a propagandist, a liar and now proven fool.

Didn't I post that already Zorro? Did you not read it? Wasn't that the point of my own post?

You can keep repeating "GFY" as long as you like. You can keep repeating your original false headline as well. All that does is show that you ignore the facts completely and respond with insults when you're proven wrong. Your mindless posts with a simple "GFY" add nothing to any discussion and violate the TOS of this board. You agreed to those terms, but your word obviously means nothing to you. You have no honor or credibility left here as a result of such behavior.

There is another possible factor and I wish that I could find the article to link to. but there is a recently discovered molecule in the atmosphere that affects cloud cover when there are temperature increases. The general effect is that it cancels out the higher temperatures.
So we get some help not that we deserve it...

Well before I tell you to GFY again, let's get a ruling from CJ. I alerted the post you objected to and explained that you consider it to be a violation. I was not under the impression it was a violation. Before you go into another lather of your pious bs, try shutting your mouth until we hear from her?

Gore is a liar,
The models you folks cite are lies,
The inflammatory claims, such as those of an ice free arctic are lies meant to stampede public opinion policy and the allocation of funds, which interestingly, once the Green liars get the funds flowing they then stand in the stream like Grizzlies in a salmon run and harvest the taxpayers money for their own grubby greedy pockets. That you advocate argue and back such liars and theives makes you as bad as they are.

Zorro, I've never reported a note as a TOS violation ever, nor have I ever removed a note for such a reason.

But it's pretty obvious that a post consisting solely of "GFY" falls under this violation:

quote:
Postings that harass, threaten, embarrass or cause distress or discomfort to another Aantares Member or other individual or group, or hostile and/or inflammatory notes meant to disrupt the use and enjoyment of our site by Aantares Members;
Certainly a "GFY" note serves no useful purpose.

Let's go over the issue again, since you still haven't responded to the facts.

1) You said Al Gore "said" the North Pole "would be completely melted this year." The article you linked to didn't say that. It said that Gore talked of a statistical possibility, not a certainty. Gore's statement as quoted was hedged and since it was hedged it was not a lie. Your statement is not hedged and misrepresents what Gore said.

2) You quote the source that Gore used as denying he had said such a thing. My link reports that Gore's source actually published an article saying what Gore stated around the time in 2009 that Gore issued his statement. Point: I presented evidence Gore's statement was accurate--and it was a PUBLISHED statement by Gore's source, in writing, at the time--not hearsay or a later recantation.

So if you choose to tell me to "GFY" again without dealing with the issue, I'll know for sure you have no interest in discussing it. And if you repeat your false statements, I'll know the same.

I wish you would simply admit you're wrong when you're wrong, but that's too much to ask for apparently. But let's not continuously repeat "GFY" as your response, please. It's insulting, rude, hostile, and adds nothing to any discussion.

And if I SAY it causes me distress, it's a violation anyway.

Jeff

U.S. Icebreaker About to Reach Cut-Off Alaska Town.

Gore is a huge lying pile of crap. Anyone who claims to believe his pronouncements of pending doom is either a liar or an idiot. You seem too smart to be an idiot, but who knows?
quote:

America’s lone Arctic icebreaker is carving a path to Nome that will bring relief to the city—but it also highlights the critical state of U.S. ice-breaking capabilities

Global warming lies affect public policy. Why invest in ice-breakers if the arctic is soon to be ice-free?
quote:

After a week of ramming through sea ice up to 8 feet thick, the Coast Guard icebreaker Healy is expected to reach Nome, Alaska, today—with a Russian tanker loaded with a winter’s worth of heating oil and gasoline on its tail. The ships have been battling through 300 miles of ice, wind, and cold to re-supply the isolated coastal town of 3500, which needs the fuel to power snow plows, ambulances, fire trucks, police vehicles, and heat 1000 homes through what’s so far been an unusually cold and harsh Alaskan winter (yesterday’s low: −36 degrees F with wind chill).

In the meantime, there is a personal insult note in this topic which I'll take care of now.

Z. suggested that Jeff "read the title of the article" to see where "Gore said the ice cap would be ice free this year."

The title of the article is NOT a Gore quote... it's the article author's words, not Gore's words.

I followed all the links in the article posted by Z. Of those available (damn few, btw) not a single one has Gore stating the North Pole would be completely melted this year.

If the RW'rs spent 20% of their time on learning the FACTS associated with issues, they'd have LOTS of time to decry truth-based issues rather than their myths, lies and faerie tales.

Almost makes me feel sorry for RW'rs.

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=gfy

says there are two definitions for GFY. I didn't know that. Sorry. I'd only heard the obscene one.

Zorro, I never said I reported anything as a violation or thought you had said that; on the contrary, I said I never reported anything as a violation. I thought it was a little odd that you reported your OWN post, but that's your decision.

Let's go over the issue just one more time. If a meteorologist says "Some weather modules suggest that there is a 70% chance of rain next Tuesday" and it does not rain, would you say the meteorologist was a liar? Would you berate him as a fraud? All Gore did was make a similar statement about projections given by some models for climate change.

And that fact that it did NOT rain on Tuesday doesn't mean the model was wrong either. It doesn't mean the science has to be abandoned. The model has a statistical probability built in, and that gives it flexibility for things that are not certain.

Predicting climate change years into the future is not an easy task, obviously. Gore never said he was a scientist presenting his own research--he was presenting the research of others.

I've already linked twice to proof that Gore's source DID make the claim. Do I really have to do it a third time? Aren't you paying attention? Do you think denying that fact will make it go away?

quote:
Gore is a fraud, you know it, I know it, the entire world knows it.
I assume you can remember that Al Gore was Vice President of the U. S. for eight years. Here's what Wikipedia has to say about his career following that.

quote:
Al Gore is the founder and current chair of the Alliance for Climate Protection, the co-founder and chair of Generation Investment Management, the co-founder and chair of Current TV, a member of the Board of Directors of Apple Inc., and a senior adviser to Google.[7] Gore is also a partner in the venture capital firm, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, heading its climate change solutions group.[8][9] He has served as a visiting professor at Middle Tennessee State University, Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, Fisk University, and the University of California, Los Angeles.[7][10][11][12]

Gore has received a number of awards including the Nobel Peace Prize (joint award with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) (2007), a Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album (2009) for his book An Inconvenient Truth,[13] a Primetime Emmy Award for Current TV (2007), and a Webby Award (2005). Gore was also the subject of the Academy Award-winning (2007) documentary An Inconvenient Truth in 2006. In 2007 he was named a runner-up for Time's 2007 Person of the Year
Zorro, you say the world knows he's a fraud and that I know it too. Well, I don't. And I'd say that someone given the Nobel Peace Prize, a Grammy, an Emmy, a Webby, an Academy Award, who was runner-up for Person of the Year by Time, is not known by the world to be a fraud.

Isn't it obvious?

I wouldn't say that Gore or any human is always right about everything. But to call him a liar and a fraud is beyond the pale.

Jeff
