Fed’s Beige Book more upbeat about economy
By Greg Robb, MarketWatch WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) — Economic conditions improved as 2011 drew to a close, according to the Federal Reserve’s latest survey of economic conditions released on Wednesday The Beige Book survey of business contacts in the Fed’s 12 districts said economic activity increased “at a modest to moderate pace.” This rate is an improvement from the mid-November report which said some districts were growing at a “slow” pace. “Compared with prior summaries, the reports on balance suggest ongoing improvement in economic conditions in recent months, with most districts highlighting more favorable conditions than identified in reports from late spring through early fall,” the report said. It looks like more than a few people received new cars for Christmas. Nice spin job, you failed to mention it was by the weakest amount in over seven months, 0.1%, that is a hair over zero. That isn't good when we are talking about December, the month expected to be the strongest month by far. Spending at electronics and appliance stores fell 3.9 percent in December, while shopping at department stores slipped 0.2 percent. ... Excluding autos, retail sales fell 0.2 percent, the first decline since May 2010. Sales at food and beverage stores fell 0.2 percent in December. Also holding back the overall gain in sales ...
