Fed’s Beige Book more upbeat about economy

By Greg Robb, MarketWatch
WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) — Economic conditions improved as 2011 drew to a close, according to the Federal Reserve’s latest survey of economic conditions released on Wednesday

The Beige Book survey of business contacts in the Fed’s 12 districts said economic activity increased “at a modest to moderate pace.”

This rate is an improvement from the mid-November report which said some districts were growing at a “slow” pace.

“Compared with prior summaries, the reports on balance suggest ongoing improvement in economic conditions in recent months, with most districts highlighting more favorable conditions than identified in reports from late spring through early fall,” the report said. Read excerpts from the Beige Book.

Conservative Republicans like to cheer against the U.S. economy and fire people.

The Republicans' main complaint is that President Obama hasn't done a good enough job cleaning up Bush's mess.

Full moon for the Cinco de Mayo this year. Listen to the Republicans howl!

And far left liberal kooks make these kinds of generalizations.

As long as the black man is in office we want the economy to fail. We would also circumvent the constitution so a republican will be elected. I could make up a list!

"Retail sales rose..."

"Total retail sales increased ..."

"The upward revision for November sales suggests consumers likely frontloaded their holiday shopping."

It looks like more than a few people received new cars for Christmas. Not bad since that falls in to the Durable Goods category and is a major expense.

One can usually tell what the Righties are doing by the accusations they make toward others.

I had barely posted for about 3 months and other than Chango not a peep about the improving economy. Which has been improving rather consistently, albeit slowly, for most of 2 years now.

Nice spin job, you failed to mention it was by the weakest amount in over seven months, 0.1%, that is a hair over zero. That isn't good when we are talking about December, the month expected to be the strongest month by far.

Spending at electronics and appliance stores fell 3.9 percent in December, while shopping at department stores slipped 0.2 percent.
...
Excluding autos, retail sales fell 0.2 percent, the first decline since May 2010.

Sales at food and beverage stores fell 0.2 percent in December. Also holding back the overall gain in sales
...
Core retail sales, which exclude autos, gasoline and building materials, dropped 0.1 percent in December
...
Core sales correspond most closely with the consumer spending component of the government's gross domestic product report

Retail sales are floundering because under Obama, there are more Americans in poverty since anytime since the Census started tracking poverty. Bot of course, Obama assures us first, that it could be worse, and second, none of this is his fault.

I believe you are wrong. There may be handful of republicans that see it that way, but to say all of them just prove your prejudice. And I think you have me mistaken for being republican.

Sure it's been improving, but it surely isn't nothing to write home about. It's the one of the weakest recoveries I've ever seen. It's a shame business doesn't have confidence in this regime.

I blame Bush!

Indeed. Obama has lost another 1.5 million jobs since the recovery began, a feat unequaled. On average we have GAINED 3.5M jobs by this point in the recovery.

Good news for America is bad news for Republicans.

However, even Romney is changing his campaign rhetoric in anticipation of a good 2012.

November was twice as strong as first reported. Shoppers merely shopped early this year.

Meager 0.1% Retail Sales
quote:

“Apparently, all those reports of a robust holiday shopping season were made by people too much into the holiday spirits as retail sales did not surge in December,” said Joel Naroff, president of Naroff Economic Advisors, Inc.

Sales at online retailers, another supposed holiday hotspot, fell 0.4%.

Sales at the nation’s malls were lower in December. Sales at general merchandise stores fell 0.8%, including a 0.2% decrease at department stores.
...
“The holiday season may not have wrapped up quite as nicely as anticipated, particularly given the steps taken by many retailers to draw in last-minute shoppers through hefty discounts,” wrote Jim Baird, chief investment strategist for Plante Moran Financial Advisors, in a research note.

In a separate report Thursday, the Labor Department said initial claims for state unemployment insurance jumped 24,000 to 399,000 in the latest week.
...

...
Sales at electronics stores dropped considerably in December. Excluding a 1.5% rise in motor vehicles sales, retail sales for the month fell 0.2% — much weaker than the 0.3% gain expected.
...
So-called “core” sales, which exclude autos, gasoline, and building materials, fell 0.2% in December. This was the one and only drop in core sales seen during 2011.

2011 retail sales growth was the best since 1999. No thanks to George Bush.

That doesn't mean retail sales is better since 1999. It just means we were in a recession and it's been down for so long it has nowhere to go but up.
