President Obama is a feckless clown as evidenced by his voting "present" on approval of the Keystone Pipeline
quote:

Torn between the need to create jobs, reduce the cost of energy and get our economy going on one hand, and the emotional biases of his environmentalist base on the other, Obama punted. I assume that if and when the time comes–post-election–Obama will do what he has wanted to do all along, and kill the pipeline.

We have written about Keystone a number of times. In this post, we quoted a study that concluded the pipeline would moderate the price of oil and create between 250,000 and 553,000 permanent American jobs. Here, we quoted at length another study of the beneficial effect of the pipeline on our economy, along with related energy development policies. There simply is no doubt that building the pipeline and transporting Canadian oil efficiently to refineries in the U.S. would give our economy a major boost.

I don’t suppose anyone remembers the speech that President Obama gave in support of his “Jobs Act” on September 7–ancient history, I know–and it is almost cruel to remind this inept president of his own words. This is what we wrote at the time:

Obama evidently has forgotten the stimulus bill and the many thousands of shovel-ready jobs that, as Obama later admitted–ha-ha–weren’t so shovel-ready after all. So, what has changed? Why will this year’s smaller “stimulus” create jobs when his previous, much larger bill was a complete failure? This was the closest Obama came to an answer:

We’re cutting the red tape that prevents some of these projects from getting started as quickly as possible.

Really? “Red tape” as in environmental regulations that block the construction of–for example–refineries and pipelines?

Yup and Canada has said they may not wait, but will rather build the pipeline to their Pacific coast and ship the oil to China.

AFP - Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Sunday that he was looking at exporting more oil to China after the United States delayed a decision on a controversial pipeline.

President Barack Obama's administration last week put off a decision on Keystone XL project after a major protest campaign by environmentalists, who say the pipeline would be prone to accidents and worsen climate change.

The conservative Canadian leader, taking part in a summit in Hawaii hosted by Obama said the pipeline decision had produced "extremely negative reactions" and that he discussed oil exports with Chinese President Hu Jintao.

"This does underscore the necessity of Canada making sure that we are able to access Asian markets for our energy products," Harper told reporters. "I indicated that yesterday (Saturday) to President Hu of China."

The Harper government has pressed Obama to approve the 1,700-mile (2,700-kilometer) pipeline extension, which would stretch through Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas and Oklahoma before ending up in Texas.

Canada, the pipeline's lead company TransCanada, and Obama's Republican opponents say the $7 billion project would provide the United States with a stable source of energy from an ally and create thousands of jobs.

These may be dumb questions but:

What is to stop Canada from refining that oil sand in Canada and then shipping it like they already do with their other oil? This is, after all, Canada's natural resource, not ours. And they are the major beneficiary of its production.

Who owns the tar sand oil once it is in the U.S. pipe line, who owns it once it is refined on the Gulf Coast, and who decides where it is shipped from there? TransCanada?

Republican Senator Mike Johanns.....welcomed an announcement last week from the U.S. State Department that it will conduct additional analysis on the proposed Keystone XL Pipeline.

Republican Johanns has voiced concern that the federal review of the proposed pipeline has been inadequate, particularly in regard to protection of the Ogallala Aquifer.

“This additional analysis is the right thing to do,” said Republican Johanns. “The original review should have been complete, but I am pleased that the State Department has now acknowledged the need to look further into the implications of TransCanada’s preferred route. I believe there are better options to protect the Ogallala Aquifer and I look forward to the additional review. The analysis must fully consider the potential of a pipeline through sandy soil over the middle of the aquifer where the water table is so high. We have only one Ogallala Aquifer and we must protect it.”

Republican Johanns said that “without question, our country needs additional supplies of energy, yet here we are tangled up because of sloppy routing.”

“We have many pipelines in Nebraska; in fact we have a Keystone pipeline, which was built with almost no objection,” he said. “I support pipelines. I am pleased that our state helps move much-needed crude oil to refineries. My objection to the Keystone XL Pipeline stems from sloppy routing and incomplete analysis.”

Not that he cares, but I am very disapointed in the Canadian Prime Minister! In effect threatening President Obama, and alighning himself with the political right in this country.
Whether ,or not,you consider these enviornmental concerns legitimate, this is not what a good neighbor does!
Canada already enjoys enormous wealth from the present U.S. imports.
It is sounding like oil company greed has taken hold in Canada.

Huh? The President voted "present" on approval?

Are you daft, Zorro? The President didn't vote on the pipeline at all. Where do you get that crazy notion? What sort of "vote" could he possibly have done on the issue?

It was the State Department that was responsible for the review of the pipeline project. Here's part of its statement:

quote:
Based on the Department’s experience with pipeline project reviews and the time typically required for environmental reviews of similar scope by other agencies, it is reasonable to expect that this process including a public comment period on a supplement to the final EIS consistent with NEPA could be completed as early as the first quarter of 2013. After obtaining the additional information, the Department would determine, in consultation with the eight other agencies identified in the Executive Order, whether the proposed pipeline was in the national interest, considering all of the relevant issues together. Among the relevant issues that would be considered are environmental concerns (including climate change), energy security, economic impacts, and foreign policy.

So, Zorro, tell me how the President voted "present" as you stated.

Ridiculous.

It isn't shovel-ready until the environmental impact is assessed to the satisfaction of Nebraskans like Republican Senator Mike Johanns.

Obama killed it because he was going to piss off either the environuts or the unions if he made a decision so he voted present until after the election.

Nebraskans killed it because the environmental assessment was rushed and flawed.

The pipeline company clearly recognized their error and has now recommended a new route.
