I imagine all have heard of this medal. When I was quite young aound 1930, I hear about it during that 1st World War. It was about service people in some sort of combat doing something really brave. Me, having fought a little in Number Two and more in Korea, I thought more of it a short time ago when the three young ones of my 3rd son sent me a small book of it about ten things that took place not long ago.
The 1st of the couple I read was about this young airman who did not get along with other people. Short and terrible. Maybe a tail gunner and that ship was hit pretty bad and was on fire. Though really hated, he saved one of the men. That was about it. Another was about this black soldier who became a 2nd lieutnant in Italy. The blacks back then were hated by many Americans and really hated by fellow GIs. He ended up winning numerous machine gun nests and killing many Germans. He is responsible for finally taken the castle place along Allies to advance up into Italy. Both granted that Medal.

When I started this - I could be believe, how one receives the Medal of Honor. I don't know or cannot recall what was written when I received the Silver Star. But ( This won't get any - I'm sure - remarks. True or not ! It took Doc - sitting backwards - and me kneeling forwards over 15 minutes to lug this soldier way up that hill. Doc went down the other hill side while I had to go back down to the other two GIs. One at a time, to kneel and crawl back up the hill. It had to take near an hour to get that job done. As doc and the stretcher guys carried the three back down the hill, Under this bolder I crawled and lighted up a Chesterfield, took a drag, puffed it out, crawled out. Started to run back down over to the guys in a huddle A good hundred yards away. A motor round hit the boulder, split it and rolled it down. Missing me by inches.

A long time ago . . .

Marine Sgt. John Basilone was awarded the MOH for actions on Guadalcanal. It earned him a rotation home to help sell war bonds, but he became frustrated with that and requested an assignment back with the Marines. He was killed on Iwo Jima on day one, and for actions that led to his death got the Navy Cross posthumously.

I just check with dictionary. Congressional Medal of Honor. I could care less for it doesn't see anything. Who gives a rap. But it would be nice for the Grand Kids. On down, On down, on down . . .

It's interesting to note the decorations of Lewis "Chesty" Puller included five Navy Crosses but some debate on why he was never awarded the MoH.

From what I saw, of you grungy guys, the first batch of older, Number Two Guys, were real Marines. Tough as all get out ! Back then, those following were not quite bearded men. Mommie and tough in high school ruled ! 1951 - and, and, and - - - .
But that' for a real old tough guy . . .
