Wayne Rooney is due to appear in court charged with drink-driving the day after his first potential return to Old Trafford since leaving to rejoin Everton this summer.
The former England captain, 31, was arrested in the early hours of Friday after Cheshire police officers stopped a black VW Beetle in Wilmslow.
He was released on bail and is due to appear at Stockport magistrates court on Monday 18 September, the day after his club play at Manchester United.
The record goalscorer for both Manchester United and England has found the net twice in Everton’s first three league games of the season, but is not due to play this weekend after retiring from the national team last month.
Rooney started his career at his boyhood club, Everton, before moving in 2004 to Manchester United, where he spent 13 years.
