Tottenham Hotspur could be bought up by baseball giants New York Yankees for £450 million, according to the Daily Star.

The hugely successful baseball club's sudden interest in Spurs comes on the back of Yankees owner George Steinbrenner's death last week, aged 80 - with control of the organisation now passing down to his sons Hal and Hank.

The report claims that Hank, a former college soccer player, expressed an interest in buying the club in the early 1990s, and is now said to be weighing up an offer for a major stake in the White Hart Lane outfit.

When asked about buying into another sports franchise, Hank said: "The only thing would be a major soccer team in Europe, preferably in the Premier League. That's always a possibility for me."

It remains to be seen how Spurs fans would react to any future Yankees ownership of the club.

There are currently several American owners of Barclays Premier League teams including the Glazer family, who run Manchester United, and Liverpool co-owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks.

Both are proving to be unpopular figures at their respective clubs.
