Cyclone Winston hit Fiji on Feb 20-21, 2016. The strongest cyclone to make landfall ever recorded in the Southern Hemisphere. Cat 5 of course. It the highest rating. Winds of 325 kmh. The storm raged for over 5 hours.

Fiji is a rather small target in the large Pacific. The cyclone first passed by to the north but then made a U-turn and the eye crossed the northern islands including part of one of the two major islands.

It did terrible damage, killing 44 people. 30,000 homes damaged, many destroyed. Whole areas scoured clean. 350,000 people were in shelters, one third of the total Fijian population. The normally lush tropical landscape in some areas was left with hardly a leaf.

Some people spent the storm under their houses holding on to the foundation posts. In one village they took to the 120 year old church as the shelter. It had withstood many hurricanes, not this one. It has a basement, very rare there. The people took shelter down there just before the building collapsed. It had stood providing shelter for so long.

The people had lived through many cyclones and hadn't taken this one seriously enough despite the warnings. A storm surge unlike anything anyone there had seen before wiped out what the wind hadn't already knocked down as many of the villages were located near the beaches.

Those that had huddled under their floor boards came out from under to find nothing was left above them. Everything was gone. Not only was their home leveled but all their possessions were gone or destroyed. Some items were blown as far as two miles away. Their furniture, clothing, and other items were gone, damaged, or destroyed. Then there was the rain.

And one might think once the hurricane passed that was the end of it. You pick up and start to rebuild, but no.

New cyclone threatens children, families in Fiji

Only weeks after category 5 Cyclone Winston ripped through the country, Fiji is once again facing extreme weather conditions due to the presence of three tropical disturbances, one of which has formed into rapidly intensifying Cyclone Zena. The tropical disturbances have caused widespread flooding across large parts of the country, including areas already badly affected by Cyclone Winston.

The three following storms and the second hurricane Zena not only flooded towns and farmland but threatened to rot the root crops which was all that left after the wind had stripped other crops.

The wind and flooding wiped out much of the sugar cane over large areas. Sugar cane only produces the sugar at the end of the life cycle so the immature cane that was damaged is worthless. I think sugar is the largest export product of Fiji these days.

Fiji's second largest city flooded as well.

The gallows humor at the time had people saying Winston took our home and our belongings and we are left living under a tarp strung from a tree. Now cyclone Zena wants to take our tree.

The Children were very traumatized after TC Winston and each following storm plus the second cyclone had them terrified. The poverty is rampant there and they lost what little they had.

The first photo at the bottom of this link shows the pain.
