Vote-By-Mail "nullifies" the SECRET BALLOT principle

Regardless of whatever else raises concerns (or does not), voting by mail DOES eliminate the "secrecy" of your ballot.

Other than that, it's up to each voter's personal preferences as to how (by mail or in person) they will submit their ballot.

Here are some GOOGLE results using the phrase: vote by mail nullifies secret ballot

Yesterday (06 August), I received an unsolicited "absentee vote" request/registration form, via USPS mail.

The organization that sent it was NOT the Virginia Elections Office.

The "suspect" organization might just have been "do gooders" trying to encourge people to vote using the most convenient method (in these pandemic times).

The following is a statement issued yesterday (06 August) on the Official Virginia Elections website:

VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF ELECTIONS’ STATEMENT CONCERNING THIRD PARTY MAILINGS

RICHMOND, VA – The Center for Voter Information recently mailed absentee ballot applications to Virginia residents. The Virginia Department of Elections has no affiliation with this group nor coordinates with any third party groups on campaign efforts.

We are aware that voters in multiple localities that received an absentee ballot application were given pre-paid return envelopes addressed to the incorrect registrar’s office.

The Virginia Department of Elections encourages all voters that would like to receive an absentee ballot for the November election to apply electronically on our website www.elections.virginia.gov/voterinformation.

Any applications that arrive in the wrong locality's office will be forwarded immediately to the correct office for processing.

If you have already applied for an absentee ballot, you do not need to submit a new application. The first day that absentee ballots will be mailed is September 18, 2020. Other inquiries regarding this mailing can be directed to the Center for Voter Information.
And so, yes I got one of those "3rd party" solicitations. What is troubling to me is the fact that such an organization (if completely legit) would NOT know the correct mailing address of the City's REGISTRAR!

FWIW - YMMV

WOW!

Of course I’d certainly check who is sending applications but this looks like a Trump ploy, or Russia, if that’s different! I remember sample ballots being handed to us at the polls. It often gave you time to read the propositions. Sometimes it helped you know who no to vote for too!

I do recall thinking that absentee ballots aren’t quite so secret, but at our polls we are given ballot numbers that are pretty close to fed, and stacked in the machine in numerical order. Not as secret that way either. And then there is the guy that helps you feed the ballot, I’m OT sure what he’s checking but I wish he’d just go away!

I'm not sure that this (incorrect return address) wasn't just an error. However; I'm fairly certain that the Official Virginia Elections Office will be investigating this matter.

Funny thing is... just a few days before receiving this "bogus ?" form... wifey and I had requested such a form using the official elections website. When I got this form, partially completed (they just wanted my social security number) and with it being "per-paid return postage"... those two things raised a red flag. So, I went to the official elections website and found the announcement (which I quoted above). BTW: we're still awaiting the forms, from the official elections office (I doubt they'll have "pre-paid return postage" envelopes enclosed, because that's a lot of money which could be put to better use for the State of Virginia).

I always goto the official elections website and download a SAMPLE BALLOT (long before going to the polls to vote) so that I can read and research the issues/propositions/candidates. This will be the first year that I will vote "absentee" due to the covid-19 pandemic. Frankly, I don't care who knows for whom I vote (I'm pretty outspoken about it). LOL!

I sent my Dad an article about the ballots including the partially filled out ones. I got back a short tirade about how anyone could be supporting socialism! I knew he had supported Trump, it appears he still does, but he seemed to miss the whole point about he may have gotten a ballot that could be thrown out later!

Our mail has at times been flaky here. Our local post office misdirects mail, now only occasionally, but the one farther in often delays things more than a day. And we’ve had mail lost at that post office. Fortunately the registrars office is close enough that we can drop off ballots. I voted in the primary by mail, hubby went to the polls. While I want to vote early, it is actually safe to vote in person as we are normally the only voters there. There are 4 poll workers on the other side of tables, only 1 do I need to come very close too.

Well, my husband received a ballot today! He tells me there was typing on it! I’ll have to be sure it’s a ballot and not an application, but even so this is not good!

I think this is all just a matter of DJT's cohorts (himself, his PACs, his Russian Allies, etc.) trying to befuddle voters.

Just when one thinks it could not get any more bizarre... the FASCIST-in-Chief takes it to another level... DJT says Vote-by-Mail increases FRAUD, then requests absentee ballot! Roll Eyes

He says that he doesn't want to fund the USPS, because he insists doing that will cause widespread voter fraud (without a shred of evidentiary support).

Of course; we all know that he knows that he is going to LOSE in November... so he's trying to CUT THE MARGIN OF LOSS (by eliminating some of the mail-in-ballot against his bid).

The USPS is already having problems getting the mail "to citizens" in a timely manner. For example: USPS warning PA that ballots may not be delivered in time to be counted.

Oh, and then there's this: It's all just Bizarre **** that his minions will swallow (without even bothering to chew)! ROTF :rotf:

Meanwhile, my youngest daughter (nearly 40) in FL says she CAN NOT and WILL NOT vote again, for DJT, because "he's just too ****ing insane!" Applause :applause:

I just got notified that since I registered to vote by mail in the primaries I will get a ballot for November. The system has a tracking system you can check. I did that for the primary that allowed me to know when the ballot had been counted which seemed to mean as received and cannot vote again.

I had decided that I’d probably vote in person but ....

For the primary we deposited the ballot in the box at the courthouse, just so we didn’t have to deal with the mail. Not a perfect answer but retail you doable.

As for your daughter, many are seeing the light. Unfortunately some believe that socialism is where we donttto vote at all and thus are voting against the Democrats.

Postal Service Warns States of Voting by Mail Delays

The U.S. Postal Service is warning states that it cannot guarantee all ballots cast by mail for the November election will be counted as the country ramps up preparations for larger numbers of mail-in votes amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The Washington Post reported Friday that the Postal Service sent warning letters to 46 states and the District of Columbia.

In letters sent to at least several states, including the key battleground states of Michigan and Pennsylvania, the Postal Service said there is "significant risk" voters will not have enough time to complete their ballots and return them on time under current state laws.

In its letter to Pennsylvania, the Postal Service recommended that completed ballots be mailed no later than October 27, a week before the November 3 election, to ensure they can make the Election Day deadline and be counted. Pennsylvania has said voters can request a ballot as late as October 27.

In response to the Postal Service’s letter, Pennsylvania election officials late Thursday asked the state Supreme Court for permission to count ballots delivered three days after Election Day.

The Washington Post reports there are more than 60 lawsuits in the courts of a least two dozen states over the mechanics of mail-in votes.

Trump has repeatedly said, without evidence, that the November election could be rigged because of mail-in votes, claiming that Russia and China could forge U.S. paper ballots.

A test in pa is being done too. I worried ththe primary that allowing request up to one week away wouldn’t work. and even though I can walk to town in 3-4 days I didn’t want the post office to mess things up. The way out mail is delivered and picked up from/to the post office is problematic. So, we just dropped it off in town, at the registrars office on the envelope.

I remember when absentee ballots only had to be postmarked by Election Day. Then there was a week for it to arrive. Not sure when that changed because I’ve changed states a couple of times.

In many cases it hasn’t been necessary to count absentee ballots either, because there was a wide enough spread that it didn’t matter. Bush Gore showed us that state limits on reporting can also be a problem.
