Lori,

I saw a movie clip of what I think was the new Adam Sandler movie, maybe. Anyway, they were in another country and he was at a "Chicken and Waffles" place and they were making fun of the Chicken and Waffles thing.

You mean to tell me there REALLY ARE "Chicken and Waffles" restaurants?

I've never heard of such of thing and that is why I joked about it earlier in this long thread (or was it the one that preceded it?).

"Lori's Chicken and Waffles" was borne out of a very long thread that started in December 2003 back in the Diversity forum (strange how these things get started). We had been joking about a fictional place I supposedly had (I was going for the tiki bar thing myself!) and one of our former members dubbed the joint "Lori's Chicken and Waffles" (the chicken was in deference for my fondness of chicken, particularly coconut chicken... don't ask me where the waffles part came from!) Anyhoo, that's how the whole thing got started! We're back to the tiki bar theme and I'm fond of the concept of sitting out on the deck with a good margarita or pina colada, watching the palm trees sway in the breeze (tho' it IS hurricane season... they may be doing more than just swaying here in a few months!!)

There is a "Chicken and Waffles" restaurant in the NY/Long Island area also. They did a piece on it for the Food TV Network.

They actually do serve fried chicken on top of waffles. UGH! I don't find the idea appealing at all, but apparently it's THE thing to do late at night.

In one word: Roscoe's.

Roscoe's. It's a landmark - it's a lifestyle - it's terrific.

(No, they don't serve fried chicken *op top of* waffles, unless you ask them to.

Delores, the Long Beach Roscoe's is a "daughter" restaurant from the originals in L.A.

Do go, by all means. I particularly recommend gong to Sunday Brunch - yummmmmm.

The Roscoe's to which I used to go regularly had a special on Wednesdays that was my favorite; chicken thighs, greens, rice or grits, hot-water cornbread. DEEEEEEE -licious!

On the other hand, the Stubby is terrific, too - 1/4 fried chicken, eggs, grit, fluffy biscuits. Ask for the chicken to be "smothered" and you'll get a luscious onion gravy over it. Sloppy but worth it.

While driving downtown today I noticed a sign on one of our local "choke n pukes" that was advertizing chicken wings and waffles and in parenthesis the words (waffle cut fries). One thing we aren't noted for up here is good food! Wink ;)

Henry -

I can't eat fish or shellfish, but if'n you wanna step up to the plate and cook it (I have no experience at all in cooking things that swim!) I'll be more than happy to add it to the menu...

That ant has been on an awfully long sabbatical...

Peachy -

Coconut chicken is kinda like coconut shrimp, only with chicken instead! It's battered up, and coconut and coconut extract and flaked coconut are added to the batter. Some folks serve it up with a tropical sort of dipping sauce, something along the line of a mango type thing. YUMMY!!!!

Koka,

Next time you take a drive with your daughter, stop at "American's Best Diner", if you're in the area:

If it were I doing it, I'd poach the chicken first - and/or use chicken "tenders", as they cook up very quickly. O'course, you could also microwave the suckers.

Hmmm, you are right Kathe. But my mama always said chicken was better if it was cooked with the bone-in (as with most meats). I rarely buy tenders but this sounds like a good idea, even for a party food.

Best diner? Harry's on Route 9 in Westborough, MA. We were stuck in New England once during a snow storm and Harry's saved the day but I gained five lbs. We go out of our way to dine there whenever in New England. Try the lobster bisque.

I use chicken tenders because they do cook quickly... not the type of thing you'd want to do with chicken breasts...
