where these pictures are found http://www.goldcoastwoodturners.org/ Other pictures, of previous months, can be found in NEWSLETTERS and MEMBERS GALLERY We also had a photo set up so members could get pictures of their best pieces for the club gallery. We had a candlestick challenge, where we were to make a candlestick. The main purpose of the challenge is to make something we normally won't make. I was making a three armed candle stick. I made one, shown below, was my first, and mainly to explore the concept. I have no successful finished attempts so I took it to the meeting just for something to show. This is the side view, on the left, of my candle stick. This, in front, is the front view of my candle stick. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Roger Stegman rstegman@earthlink.net rstegman@aol.com "If you write, you are a writer. This is one of my latest projects These pictures are not from the turning club meeting. This is norfolk island pine. Norfolk island pine has the branches in a circle around the trunk, then there is a space, then you get another ring of branches. all the way up the tree. That feature is something that makes this tree really popular to wood turners. In this carving, each eye is a knot. The vase was turned really thick so I could do some deep relief carving on it. I poured varnish into the vase to coat the inside and the wood soaked up the varnish like a sponge as I rolled the vase around to coat the entire interior surface. I did this several times before it dawned on me what was happening. When the wood is soaked, it darkens. It is popular to soak a piece in linseed oil, which makes the wood somewhat translucent. The varnish causes a similar effect, but darker. I had done experiments to coat the surface so it would remain light, but the experiments were inconclusive. What I did got a similar effect, for the most part. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Roger Stegman rstegman@earthlink.net rstegman@aol.com "If you write, you are a writer. I had painted the picture on the card. which was a palm tree with lights, and presents around the base. I had three types. On small card stock, I had the lights up in the fronds. IN the large card stock, I had eight where I had drawn lines with a marker, then painted the lights on them. I then did another batch of cards where the lights were on the trunk of the tree. I got a lot of compliments on the quality of the cards. I finished most of my Christmas cards on Wednesday. I had some cards that needed some items on them, but enough were done to be said to be done. For the lettering on the inside and on the back, I tried using the printer. That turned out to be almost as much work as doing it by hand. It is hard to hide some colored inks. The hardest part is getting the card orientation right. ON the small cards, which I did first, I drew what I wanted to be in a drawing program I had. I took one card and printed it twice over the drawing by accident before I got the back lettering in the right place. I printed the inside twice, once upside down on the wrong side. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Roger Stegman rstegman@earthlink.net rstegman@aol.com "If you write, you are a writer. I am sorry to say, that is one piece. It is carved with all three faces on it. It can be used for drink as it is sealed with varnish. I would not recommend it but it can be used as such. Before I had the finish on it. I showed it to a master carver. She told me to START at $300 and go up from there. It is on display down in Dania Florida. Rs

http://www.goldcoastwoodturners.org/ Where these pictures are found Monroe Dress vase It resembled Marilyn Monroe's famous dress The base of the dress vases are the natural shape of the wood I used. I turned the top to shape, drilled out the inside, drilled for the arm holes, then carved the rest to shape. The breasts was a ring all the way around. I carved away what was not breast. These are a combination of turning and carving. two strap old oak dress The oak is more weathered than the following dress vase two strap newer oak dress this is from the same tree, just in better shape and came out lighter. creamer cup right side I have no control over how the picture was tipped. to fit the page I get this from. creamer cup left side Correct orientation.
