is the location of where these pictures came from. You can see what I am working towards

The pumpkins shown are made in strangler Fig that had been out in the weather for about two months. The normally white wood changed drastically. The flower is made out of rose wood. That flower was supposed to be a pitcher, but I curled the lip wrong, so to save the wood, I made it into a flower. I sold the flower and one pumpkin to my boss.

Roger,

I haven't looked at this board in months and so didn't see any of these pictures when you first posted them. You do beautiful work! I especially love your candlesticks and goblets and salad bowls. I assume these pieces can actually be used for food and aren't just decorative...or are they?

The pieces I named, are the ones I did. The other pieces are by other club members.

The coatings we use are for the most part, food safe. I use varnish for most of my pieces and the varnish is food safe as long as you cannot smell it. some also use salad bowl oils. As to the rest of the pieces, some that are decorative might have a finish that would not take a punishment. My varnishes are thin so there they are not really designed to take abuse. They can be used, though. My plates, for example, arebest hand washed and even better to hold paper plates, if you feel the need to use them.
Some pieces, by their nature, are strictly for looks.
Thanks for your interest.

Roger,

Wow...I never even thought about putting them in a dishwasher! It's not that I have anything against dishwashers, but I haven't used one in so long I don't even think in those terms any more. The kitchen where I am now is too small for a dishwasher, too small for much of anything, in fact.

I like the idea of using paper plates with the wooden ones. That would be great for a picnic where you wouldn't want to bring anything breakable, and you could also use the cheapie biodegradable paper plates as liners instead of the styrofoam ones. Those are the only kind of paper plates I ever use anyway.

Then when you got the wooden plates home you could just rinse them off and dry them, and only wash them with soap occasionally.

For real use, I would use a vegitable oil rather than a varnish. Periodically, especially after a really messy use and hard cleaning, just wipe more oil on and it is ready to go. One could very well care for them as you would a wooden cutting board.

I like the ring pattern that yellow pine has, so I use that wood for my plates. Depending on how I position the wood before I start, I can either get an hour glass or a oval in the bottom of the plate.

I've since painted a tree on each of the plates I made. That makes them a little extra special. Whether they will sell would be something different. I planned on having twelve plates for the show, but will actually be lucky to have four let alone six.

This month's pictures are going to be really good. I will have a rooster (the best bird bowl I have ever made) and possibly two ducks to show off.

Roger,

I'm sorry it's taken me so long to respond, but I've been distracted by about a million other things as usual. I didn't know you needed to oil a wooden cutting board. I'm disappointed with my bamboo cutting board, which looked so pretty when I bought it but is now starting to warp even though it's still fairly new. It's made out of laminated bamboo in three pieces, with the laminated strips running lengthwise on the center piece and crosswise on the two end pieces. Now the end pieces have warped and are no longer level with the center, and that happened in just a few months. It's made in China as you might expect.

I can't afford to buy any of your pieces, especially right now when I've just had a major financial disaster, but you might want to consider Etsy, the new marketplace for handcrafted wares, as a possible venue for your woodwork. Etsy is best described as a perpetual online crafts fair, and I should probably start a new note dedicated just to Etsy, as a means of introduction to anyone who doesn't know about them already. I just registered with them a few minutes ago.

There is so much common knowledge that is no longer common any more, simply because it was superseded by new technologies. Few of us know anything about the care of leather. We are so used to plastics and cheep metals that we don't know the proper care of wood products. Yes, cutting boards are often coated with oil, but many are used dry. There are advantages and disadvantages either way. The oil protects the wood from much mess that would get into the wood, but the oil might be a carrier of germs.
Researchers found that wood has a mechanism for removing germs. the natural antibiotics that trees have when alive, still works after the wood has gone through what people put it through. the germs disappear from the surface, not to be seen again.
For an oil, Mineral oil or a special salad bowl oil is often used. Vegetable oils are also used fairly often. My guess is to scrub it throughly periodically and then re-oil it.

Sorry for the size of these pictures.
if you do not wish to scroll back and fourth, you can see them at a better size at http://home.earthlink.net/~rogerstegman/

March 16th 2008, the lighthouse point yacht club presented an invitation only art show with 50 artists. They have done this for 14 years. My dad was invited to the show for several years. In 2000, I was in as a guest with my dad, and had the end of his table for my carvings on display. I expanded into half the table in my dad's last year. This year and last year, since my dad's death, I have had the table to myself. These pictures are of my table.

the right end view of my table.

right middle view of my table

If you have any questions about any carving or turning, I will try to answer it. Most of these are still in stock so I am willing to nagotiate about sales of any you are interested in (oir I can make something like it if I don't have it any more)<g>

John,

I like the work done by others, than my stuff.
Every month, I bring what I consider great items. I then see my work next to theirs, and see that I have to work a bit harder to improve. The "competition" is desperately needed for me to get better. It is also fun to see where I am at the moment.
Next month should have some really good items. I am making a bowl that looks like it is simply made up of leaves. It is a lot of work but is really fun challenge to make. I am learning how not to do things, every step of the way.

Thanks for the compliments.
Roger

Select the AUGUST 2008 NEWSLETTER. It is a PDF file. This has a mention of my hand, a picture of me with my leaf bowl, and a write up about me as turner of the month. I have to admit that I wrote the ABOUT THE ARTIST and it was very lightly edited. I did make a mistake. It says that I started wood carving in Junuary 2007, and it should say January 2000.

To keep this web site from getting too big, they remove the older notes. To keep these pictures from disappearing, I am adding this note to it.
I stole this from a series of notes I posted on another board.
These are my web pages that have pictures on them

These are the web sites I have with something interesting on. I have more web sites to fill, but not yet had the time.
