WHO's April 30 report shows an increased number of confirmed cases of swine flu. This reflects the increased opportunity for diagnostic lab work, rather than an increased number of infections. In Mexico only 90 cases have been confirmed, with 7 deaths attributed to the disease. This count contradicts the April 29 report from WHO.

The standard CDC flu map, left unattended since April 18, was revised today. The new map includes confirmed cases the new swine flu (H1N1), thus reversing the diminishing trend that is typical for the late flu season. (Press the refresh button if the map does not display properly.)

The May 9 CDC flu map shows a resurgence of infections at a time when the rate is expected to diminish. The increase is only partially accounted for by the H1N1 variant. Most of the new activity is in the states that share a border with Mexico.
