| The Influenza A(H1N1) WHO update #67, as of 20 September 2009 09:00 GMT, reports a grand total of over 300,000 laboratory confirmed cases of H1N1 influenza, with at least 3,917 deaths, world-wide. As more and more countries have stopped counting individual cases, particularly of milder illness, the case count is significantly lower than the actually number of cases that have occurred. While the case counts no longer reflect actual disease activity. WHO is actively monitoring the progress of the pandemic through frequent consultations with the WHO Regional Offices and member states and through monitoring of multiple sources of data. In North America, the United States has reported continued increases in activity above the seasonal baseline for the last 2 to 3 weeks, primarily in the southeast but now also appearing in the upper midwest and the northeast. |

| The CDC update for week 39 (ending October 3, 2009) reports nineteen influenza-associated pediatric deaths reported during week 39 (Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Maryland [2], North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee [3], Texas [7], and Wisconsin). Sixteen of these deaths were associated with 2009 influenza A (H1N1) virus infection and three were associated with influenza A virus, for which subtype was undetermined. The proportion of deaths attributed to pneumonia and influenza was at the epidemic threshold. The map for October 3 shows widespread H1N1 flu in most of the United States. |
